On 13 April 2022, Shinshu University signed an Agreement of Cooperation with the University of East Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and held an official signing ceremony at Shinshu University’s Matsumoto Campus.

The University of East Sarajevo was represented by Dr. Sinisa Berjan, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bosnia and Herzegovina to Japan. On the Shinshu University side, the ceremony was attended by President Nakamura, Vice-President Yonekura (International Planning and Strategy), Executive Director Shirai (Department of International Affairs), Director Sasaki (Division of International Planning) and Assistant Professor Amanda Schuetze (Center for Global Education and Collaboration). President Nakamura expressed his hope that this academic exchange would facilitate the creation of important research initiatives for both universities. The signing ceremony was followed by a discussion with Ambassador Berjan on future cooperation, especially in the fields of agriculture and medicine.

This was the second occasion on which the University had the pleasure of welcoming Ambassador Berjan to the Matsumoto campus, the first being his courtesy visit in April 2021. Both Sarajevo and Nagano city, surrounded by mountains and forests, are known for their ski resorts and for hosting the Winter Olympics (in 1984 and 1998, respectively). The two cities are also both located in wine-growing regions.

The agreement will promote joint research and other academic exchanges, with projects focusing on interests the two universities share, such as the conservation of the natural environment.
