On 22 November 2025, President Soichiro Nakamura and Vice President Yasuto Hayashi of Shinshu University visited National Pingtung University (NPTU) in Taiwan, where an inter-university academic exchange agreement was concluded between the two institutions.
National Pingtung University is a national university located in Pingtung County in southern Taiwan. Its predecessor, Pingtung Normal School under the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office, was established in April 1940. In 2014, it merged with National Pingtung University of Science and Technology to form the present institution. Today, NPTU functions as a comprehensive university with seven faculties across four campuses, playing a central role in education and research in Pingtung County and southern Taiwan.
In June 2025, researchers in the field of education from NPTU visited Japan. With support from Shinshu University, they observed educational practices at a small-scale school in Matsumoto City and visited Nagano Elementary School affiliated with the Faculty of Education. During the visit, both universities exchanged views on future academic collaboration, particularly in educational programs and in the field of ESD (Education for Sustainable Development).
NPTU is also a member of the Japan-Taiwan University Alliance for Regional Collaboration and Social Practice (the TJ Alliance), to which Shinshu University belongs. As part of efforts to strengthen USR (University Social Responsibility), deeper exchanges centered on the field of education are anticipated.
Building on these past interactions, the two universities concluded an inter-university academic exchange agreement during this visit.
Prior to the signing ceremony, NPTU held its 12th Anniversary Commemorative Ceremony, which featured student club performances, an address by the University President, recognition of university donors, and commendations for distinguished alumni.
Following the signing ceremony, the “Global Presidential Summit Forum 2025: Learning Revolution in the Age of AI: From the Classroom to the World” took place. University presidents from various countries delivered speeches, with President Nakamura also taking the stage.
