On 8 December 2025, a delegation from Shinshu University led by President Soichiro Nakamura visited Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU) in Busan, Republic of Korea.
KMOU is a national university specializing in maritime and ocean-related fields, with roots dating back to 1919. Located on Achisan Island in Busan, the university comprises three faculties and five graduate schools, and plays a key role in national projects supported by extensive research facilities and training vessels.
Shinshu University and KMOU began researcher exchanges in 2017, with collaboration accelerating by J-PEAKS since FY2023, in the field of Aqua Regeneration (ARG). An inter-university academic exchange agreement was signed in 2024, followed by the establishment of the Shinshu University / KMOU Liaison Office on KMOU’s ARCH Campus in October 2025. The visit aimed to explore opportunities to expand collaboration beyond existing research partnerships.
During the meeting between the university presidents, President Nakamura outlined Shinshu University’s research on water regeneration and energy in the context of global water challenges. KMOU President Ryoo Dong Keun proposed expanding student exchanges, including undergraduate summer programs. Given Busan’s accessibility from Japan and KMOU’s strong support environment for international students, both universities agreed to consider launching new student exchange initiatives alongside ongoing research collaboration.
The delegation also toured the Liaison Office overlooking the ocean, which is expected to serve as a central hub for future cooperation.
The visit reaffirmed both universities’ commitment to strengthening global collaboration in education and research.
