Shinshu University Signs an MoU with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM)

The MoU Signing Ceremony

On August 6, 2025, a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding for academic exchange between Shinshu University and Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) was held.

This partnership was realized based on a comprehensive cooperation agreement concluded with Toyohashi University of Technology which has established a strong partnership of academic exchange with USM. Powered by these partners, Shinshu University aims to further strengthen the internationalization of education and research.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Machida, the Japanese Consul General in Penang, along with the Vice-Chancellor, Board Members, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of USM, as well as many other related parties. From our university, President Nakamura, Executive Director Yasuda, Vice President Inoue, Distinguished Professor Endo, Special Advisor to the President Lim, and Associate Professor Hamano attended. Additionally, the ceremony was attended by over 100 participants, including many alumni who had studied at Shinshu University, as well as representatives from Japanese companies and local businesses based in Penang that have collaborative relationships with USM.

Prior to the signing, President Nakamura, Vice-Chancellor Rahman, and Consul General Machida of Japan in Penang delivered speeches, followed by a presentation by Vice President Inoue on the prospects for internationalization at Shinshu University, which has been selected for the J-PEAKS program as a distinctive research university to serve as a regional core, as well as on the strengthening of collaboration between the three universities.

Additionally, Distinguished Honorary Professor Endo, well known for his historical contributions to the discovery of carbon nanotubes by the CCVD process and their industrialization, and a highlighted researcher of the Institute for Aqua Regeneration at Shinshu University, delivered a commemorative lecture titled “Nanocarbon Science and Applications: Toward Sustainability and the Century of Water.” The lecture drew significant attention from the Vice-Chancellor of USM and many researchers, with high expectations for future collaborative research and the resulting exchange of researchers, students, and staff.

Over 100 people celebrated the event.

On the following day, August 7, 16 alumni who had previously studied at Shinshu University currently residing in Malaysia, gathered for a dinner at a seaside restaurant. The event was attended by the Consul General of Japan in Penang, Mr. Machida, and served as a meaningful opportunity to further strengthen the ties between Shinshu University and Malaysia.
