Holding the "Shinshu University International Symposium on Biotechnology"

The development of animal biotechnology is indispensable for the efficient production of safe, reliable, and high quality livestock products. On January 31st, 2012 the International Symposium on Animal Biotechnology was held at Shinshu University Faculty of Agriculture (Minamiminowa Village) with the objectives of recognizing the current status and future trends of animal biotechnology, as well as to promote exchange with industry.

At the symposium 11 researchers in basic life sciences and livestock production science that are active on the frontlines of research in the world gave invited lectures. Professor Robert Kenller of Tokyo University, who is respected worldwide in the field of life sciences law and policy, gave an overview on the advantages and problems associated with the transfer of university basic research to companies, not just in the field of basic technology. Finally Sarah Marie Cummings, Representative Director of Masuichi-Ichimura Sake Brewery, gave a special presentation from an international perspective on local promotion through sake production as an example of one industry based on biotechnology.
