1.What brought you to Shinshu University?

I was first introduced to some Shinshu students in my teaching credential program's science course taught by prof. Jenna Porter. I was able to meet and observe a presentation on Japanese culture by some English Education Shinshu students. I was very excited to meet and talk to fellow educators.

Later on, prof. Porter offered the incredible opportunity to the bilingual cohort to study abroad at Shinshu University. I was immediately interested since I wanted to continue my studies in a foreign country and learn about Japanese culture and its education system. Luckily, I was able to participate. I was joined by three other students in my cohort.

I wanted to expand my learnings to become a great educator. Shinshu University would allow me to practice my skills in teaching and communicating with novice English speakers. In my career as a bilingual educator, it is very important that I have a deep understanding of how to best work with English-learners.


2.How did you prepare for studying in Japan (Nagano)?

One thing I did to prepare for my studies was to practice Japanese. Though I did not have ample time to learn the language in its entirety, I did my best to practice every day using Duolingo and picked up some basic phrases that helped me along the way.

I also made sure to have a reliable laptop to do schoolwork abroad.


3.How was your life at Shinshu University?

I felt extremely welcomed at Shinshu University. The students are very friendly and are eager to help. I found their politeness to be very nice, especially when I had questions or needed help getting around on campus.

The accommodation in which I stayed was in a perfect location; near campus and a convenience store. I felt as though all my needs were met. The Shinshu students also socialized with us outside of school by joining us out for dinner or hosting dinner events at our accommodation. Overall, I felt very happy and enjoyed my stay.


4.What did you do in your free time?

In my free time, I would often go on walks or ride my bike. I am so grateful that Nagano and the areas surrounding Shinshu University were so walkable. I enjoyed the rainy season since I got to escape the heat from California. The gloomy weather was such a beautiful sight to see, especially with all the nature surrounding us.

Sometimes we'd go out to dinner and drinks together with our Japanese friends. We got to try out many food spots and cuisines.


5.How do you want to make the most of your experience at Shinshu University in the future?

In the future, I would definitely like to build relationships to make the most out of my time at Shinshu University. Meeting new people and forming new friendships was the highlight of my stay abroad. It allowed us to exchange our own cultures through food and music.


6.Message to the prospective students

I would like future Shinshu University students to know that they will be very happy here. Nagano is a great place to study and live. The people are very friendly and welcoming. There is so much to see and do! If you have the opportunity to study here, please do so. It is a wonderful experience that will help you gain many new insights on Japanese culture and learnings.
