Course: Exchange program for Uppsala University students, Faculty of Education
Country/Region of Citizenship: Sweden
1. What brought you to Shinshu University?
I am interested in learning about new cultures and was curious about Japan. I got the chance to go to Shinshu University via Uppsala University's exchange program, so I just had to take it, which I am very happy about.
2. How did you prepare for studying in Japan (Nagano)?
I did not prepare very much, but I made some preparations. First of all I had to find out about what was required to enter Japan, as a Swedish student, which is nothing more than a valid passport when the period of stay is this short. I also got vaccinated against Japanese encephalitis and Hepatitis B, since it is recommended, but I don't think it is really necessary. Regarding accommodation, I got really good help from the University, so right now I am staying at Nagano International House. In addition to that, I did some research about Japanese culture because I was curious about what I would encounter!
3. How was your life at Shinshu University?
I am so happy and thankful for my month in Nagano! I had a very warm welcome from both students and professors when I arrived, and I had a chance to get to know a lot of students at the university that I have spent time with during my period here. I have had student supporters who have helped me with translation from Japanese to English when that was needed during classes at the university and the elementary school where I had my teaching practice. All students have been so very inclusive and helpful, which I am very thankful for! In conclusion, my time at Shinshu University was wonderful!
4. What did you do in your free time?
I spent my free time hanging out with my new friends. I have tried a lot of new food at restaurants in this cozy town. I have also done some small trips during the weekends, for example to Hakuba, Matsumoto and Ueda. However, my favorite thing to do is to just stroll around in beautiful Nagano, eat tasty things, and look around in cozy shops!
5. How do you want to make the most of your experience at Shinshu University in the future?
This experience will be a memory for the rest of my life. First of all, it is very useful, important and enjoyable to get to know a new culture. It has made me reflect on my own culture which has given me new perspectives, on both my culture and also the Swedish school system. I will use my experience to develop my teaching skills in the future. Hopefully I will stay in touch with some of my new friends here, so that we can cooperate in the future when we are all graduated teachers.
6. Message to the prospective students
You will have a great time in this cozy town, and you will not regret going here! Don't forget to enjoy yourself. TIME FLIES!
