International Student Report (Julia Carlsson, SWEDEN)
Name: Julia Carlsson
Course: Placement/practicum internship-exchange

Country: Sweden
1. What brought you to Shinshu University?
I have always had a dream of going on an exchange and experiencing what it's like to study and live in another country. When I discovered that Uppsala University had an exchange program with Shinshu University, I immediately became interested. I did some research and instantly felt -- this is where I want to go!
2. How did you prepare for studying in Japan (Nagano)?
I prepared by contacting a student from Uppsala who took part in this exchange program a year ago and asked her if there was anything I should think about. I also had regular contact with Shinshu University to get the information I needed. I did a lot of research about Japanese manners too, to be as well prepared as possible.
3. How was your life at Shinshu University?
Where should I start? Everything was so good! The courses I took was so interesting and truly aligned with my interests. Even if there were classes almost every weekday, I still had time to experience "life in Japan".
And the people! Everyone was so kind and helpful in a way I have never experienced before.
Even if I was the only exchange student at the Faculty of Education during this time, I never felt alone! There were always people that wanted to hang out.
4. What did you do in your free time?
In my free time, I spent a lot of time with my new friends. They took me to Japanese restaurants and places around Nagano -- for example, Matsumoto and Obuse. I also got to experience Japanese culture through a festival and visiting an onsen. Some days, I spent exploring Nagano city, visiting Zenkoji Temple, and shops around the city.
5. How do you want to make the most of your experience at Shinshu University in the future?
The experiences I have gained from this month will without a doubt be helpful in the future, as a teacher in Sweden. This exchange has helped me broaden my perspectives and experience different way of teaching. I will use this as an inspiration for my future teaching.
6. Message to the prospective students
If you are interested in experiencing life in another country and culture, don't hesitate to apply here. After this month, I really feel like I've discovered Japan "for real." I've made so many new Japanese friends, and this city is truly genuine and lovely! And don't be afraid to come alone--everyone takes such good care of you. I couldn't have wished for a better experience!
This is a memory for life, and I've learned so much!
