I had the great opportunity to attend both research and clinical training in 2017 and 2019, respectively. My supervisor Dr. Tanaka-sensei was an inspiring example of Japanese work ethic. I could feel how enthusiastic he was about his research and it made me realize the importance of finding one's true passion on the way to becoming a skillful doctor. Although very busy himself, he always took time to answer my questions and allowed me to work independently as part of the team.
After my memorable research stay I felt encouraged to apply for a clinical training in the Pediatric ward as well as Emergency department. Due to the wide range of patients, I was able to attend a variety of medical procedures and got actively involved in the individual treatment.
Presenting an assigned patient in morning and evening rounds also trained my medical understanding of patient records and imaging/laboratory results. The whole team made an efforts to give me valuable advice and shared their broad knowledge with me, whenever questions occurred.
Besides many similarities of the German and Japanese health care systems, there are of course also a few differences. I consider these to be especially interesting and would like to encourage you to see for yourself. Being one of the first students from TU Dresden, I enjoyed listening to the exciting stories of other students that followed. If you give it a try, I am sure your time will be just as special as it was for us.

As a side note: The small town of Matsumoto is picturesquely embedded in a mountain scenery and has its own charm due to the rural location. Personally, I really enjoyed taking advantage of the proximity to the Japanese Alps for mountain climbing during the weekends.

For me, both training periods proved to be unforgettable experiences - a real personal and professional gain. I would like to thank everybody involved once again for their sincere support and commitment!
If I had the chance, I'd come back anytime.
