1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
I was fortunate that my university has an exchange program with Shinshu University. It gave me the opportunity to combine my interest in orthopaedics, especially upper extremity surgery, with my dream of living in Japan. My experience exceeded my expectations thanks to the welcoming environment and the support of everyone in the department.
2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
I trained in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, mainly focusing on hand and upper extremity surgery. I attended outpatient clinics, surgeries, ward rounds, and departmental conferences. Being able to observe experienced surgeons every day gave me a deeper understanding of clinical decision-making and surgical techniques.
3. What have you gained from your training and stay in Matsumoto, Japan?
I learned an incredible amount, both professionally and personally. The experience improved my clinical knowledge, exposed me to many surgical techniques, and allowed me to observe how experienced surgeons approach patient care. Living in Matsumoto also gave me the opportunity to experience Japanese culture and meet many wonderful people.
4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
This experience strengthened my motivation to become a hand surgeon and pursue an academic career. I hope to build international relationships throughout my career, and I will always remember the example set by the doctors I met--not only for their surgical skills, but also for their dedication to teaching and the way they supported students every day.
5. Advice to those who are interested in studying at Shinshu University
I highly recommend this experience to anyone interested in medicine or research. Be curious, ask questions, and take every opportunity to learn from the faculty and residents. It is a unique chance to develop professionally while experiencing Japanese culture.
