±éÂê ¡§ Research on polymers for fuel cells at University of Yamanashi

³µÍ× ¡§Polymers are one of the key materials in the polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs). In this lecture, research activities on polymeric materials for PEFCs at University of Yamanashi will be reviewed. Proton exchange polymers and dye-modified polymers are two main topics.
In the first half, the strategy to improve the proton conducting properties and durability of proton exchange membranes is presented. Effect of main chain structures, acid groups, and inorganic additives is of particular importance.
We have developed a series of multi-block copolymers containing highly localized sulfonic acid groups. The polymer membranes are highly proton conductive under fuel cell conditions due to the pronounced hydrophilic/hydrophobic phase separation. In the second half, use of gas permeable polymers for diagnosis of operating PEFCs is
described. The polymers were modified with oxygen sensitive dye
molecules and painted onto the gas flow field of a fuel cell in order to
visualize oxygen concentration. Irradiation on the dye-containing
polymer coatings and the measurement of phosphorescence from the dye enable mapping of oxygen concentration. The technique can be applicable to visualize other substances or parameters, such as water vapor, carbon dioxide, and temperature.
