　2022年2月24日にロシア軍がウクライナに侵攻してより、一か月近くが経過しています。連日のように、ウクライナの惨状、戦火を逃れて避難する人々の姿が報道され、心を痛めております。人文学という学問の根底には、人間や社会のあり方を探求することを通して、人類の平和に貢献しようとする理念があるはずです。一教員としてできることはかぎられますが、海外の友人知人と連絡をとりながら、その意見をお伝えしていきたいと思います。以下に紹介するのは、ポーランドのヤギェウォ大学の哲学部で教鞭をとるヤクブ・ザモルスキさんからのメッセージ（英文と翻訳）です。ザモルスキさんは東アジアの仏教思想を研究しており、長野県にも来訪されたことがあります。このメッセージ（3月19日）には、ウクライナの隣国ポーランドで起きていることが記されています。

　

現在，最も差し迫った問題はウクライナからの避難民の問題です。ロシアによるウクライナ侵攻が始まって以来、200万〜300万人のウクライナ人が国を離れ、女性や子供を中心に大勢の難民が毎日ここクラクフを経由して他の場所へ向かったり，ここに一時的な避難所を探したりしています。現在，多くの学者や学生が、ボランティアとして時間を割いたり、寄付をしたりして、難民の支援に奔走している最中です。難民を自分の家に招き避難させる人も少なくありません。本学（ヤギェウォ大学）では、在籍するウクライナ人学生を経済的に支援するための特別基金を設立し、戦争で故郷を追われたウクライナ人学生を受け入れ入学できるようにする準備を進めています。一方、ロシア連邦やベラルーシの大学とは、学術提携を中断しています。

　

私の知る限り，ポーランドのアカデミズム、いやポーランド社会の圧倒的多数がロシアのウクライナ侵攻を明確に非難しています。私たちは，ロシアが国家的なプロパガンダによって宣伝した戦争の公式な正当化を認めません。また、この問題をロシアとアメリカ・NATOとが対称的に対立しているという観点から議論する余地はほとんどないのです。なぜなら、私たちはポーランド国民として、NATOへの加盟はロシア国家の帝国的野心と独自の「勢力圏」を構築しようとする欲望に対する正当な防衛行為であると考えているからです。一般的に言えることとして、私たちは、（ロシアが主張するように）ウクライナやNATOがロシア連邦とその国民の法的な利益を脅かしているという意見には同意しません。私たちは、この戦争をウクライナという主権国家に対する完全に不当な攻撃として見なしています。

What is most pressing in our current situation is the situation of Ukrainian refugees: some 2-3 million Ukrainian citizens have left their country since the beginning of the conflict and large numbers of them, mostly women and children, are passing through Kraków every day or looking for a temporary shelter here. Many scholars and students these days are busy helping the refugees, volunteering their time and donating their money. Not a few have taken refugees to their homes. Our university has allocated special funds to provide financial support for the Ukrainian students enrolled in our university and is preparing to admit new Ukrainian students who have been displaced from their homes by the war. We have also suspended academic cooperation with universities in Russian Federation and Belarus.

As regards typical Polish stance towards the war: to the best of my knowledge, the large majority of our academic community, and in fact the overwhelming majority of Polish society, unequivocally condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine. This means that we not only reject the official justifications for the war publicized by the Russian state propaganda, but also that we rarely discuss this issue in terms of a symmetrical conflict between Russia and the USA/NATO. This is because as Polish citizens we tend to consider NATO membership as a legitimate defense against the imperial ambitions of the Russian state and its desire to project its own "sphere of influence" in East and Central Europe. Generally speaking, we do not agree that either Ukraine or NATO have in any way threatened the legitimate interests of the Russian Federation or its citizens and we perceive this war as a completely unjustified aggression on the sovereign state of Ukraine.
