===Message from Poland===

Poland for Ukraine

The unlawful, unprovoked, and atrocious invasion of Ukraine by the Russian forces caused a shock and outrage both in the Polish society and in the Polish scientific community. In a rare case of political unity, it is unequivocally condemned by all Polish political parties and civic groups. Many Polish intellectuals and scientists have publicly voiced their opposition to the war and their solidarity with Ukrainians. The events beyond the Polish eastern border are followed attentively by many Poles and our thoughts are constantly with the Ukrainian defenders.

The most immediate consequence of the war for Poland is that every day hundreds of thousands of people, most of them women and children, flee their homes to seek refuge in the West. As much as half of them travel to Poland, either for transit or to stay here. Civic groups, NGOs, and a great number of ordinary people are all currently involved in helping the refugees throughout Poland. Food, hygiene products, clothes, and the wealth of everyday items are collected and fundraisers are organized to help those fleeing the war. Volunteers work near the border, at railway stations, and in reception points to provide all the necessary assistance. Many Poles host refugees in their homes – some of them host their Ukrainian friends but many take in strangers that are in dire need of help. Everyday scenes of unprecedented solidarity take place.

While there is much fear in the Polish society, there is also a sense of duty. Poland and Ukraine share a long and embroiled history, but what dominates now is the sense of unity in the face of a violent invasion and a humanitarian crisis.
