1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
I was recommended the hospital by a graduate of Shinshu University, and I wanted to spend my elective in a peaceful environment with beautiful views, so I chose Shinshu University to do my elective.
My experience was wonderful, everyone I met was very supportive and friendly. The people and the environment reinforced my desire to return to Japan, motivating me to strive toward that goal. I genuinely felt like I was part of the OB/GYN team. They used their off time to show me around the city and spend time with me, and I am very grateful for that.

2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
As my primary interest was in the Obstetrics department, I spent most of my time there, but I also had the opportunity to explore the Gynaecology and Reproductive department. My schedule was usually determined on the same day, allowing me to engage with the most interesting cases available. My activities mainly included attending outpatient clinics, observing in the theatre, and shadowing doctors in the ward. I also had the pleasure of attending seminars and weekly interdisciplinary meetings.
Additionally, I had the opportunity to join lectures and practical lessons with fifth-year students in rotation, which was an invaluable experience. My experience at Shinshu University has enriched my understanding and provided a well-rounded perspective on the field.

3. Please list what you have gained from your experiences through the training at Shinshu University and the stay in Matsumoto, Japan.
I had the opportunity to hone my medical knowledge by shadowing doctors and listening to their explanations of various conditions we encountered. I observed many differences in medical management between Japan and England, which underscored the importance of considering ethnicity when prescribing medication and how diagnostic criteria can vary across different ethnic groups. Attending weekly meetings between the OB/GYN department and the Pediatrics department has enhanced my handover skills, while participating in classes with 5th-year students allowed me to gain practical skills such as suturing and the basics of laparoscopy.

4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
The practical skills I have learned will greatly benefit my future specialisation, especially in the surgical department. I aspire to embody the same kindness and patience that the doctors here show to their patients when I return to England.

5. Advice to those who are interested in studying at Shinshu University.
I highly recommend having at least a basic understanding of Japanese culture and language before coming here to make the most of your time. This knowledge will enhance your ability to connect with people and fully appreciate your surroundings. However, even without this preparation, the doctors are incredibly welcoming and supportive, and I believe you will have one of the best times of your life here, so please do not hesitate to choose Shinshu University!
