Message from the Chairman

The Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology, Shinshu University offers a doctoral program of 5 departments including Bioscience and Textile Technology, Mathematics and System Development, Materials Science and Engineering, Mountain and Environmental Science, and Bioscience and Food Production Science. It is based on the Faculty of Science at Matsumoto Campus, the Faculty of Engineering at Nagano Campus, the Faculty of Agriculture at Ina Campus, and the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology at Ueda Campus. Situated in the rich natural environment of Shinshu, the fundamental principles of the doctoral program are to create environmental systems able to exist in harmony with people and nature, to develop highly advanced manufacturing technologies, and to research underlying basic sciences. Faculty members work closely together to conduct education and research in advanced-technology that is in accordance with environmental systems.

As a university-wide strategy, Shinshu University has established 5 research institutes in education and research areas that need to be continued into the future and that can be undertaken as fusion and collaborative education and research in accordance with the characteristics of the university. They are 'the Institute of Carbon Science and Technology', 'the Center for Energy and Environmental Science', 'the Institute for Fiber Engineering', 'the Institute of Mountain Science', and 'the Institute for Biomedical Sciences'. These research institutions have been combined into a cluster, 'the Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER)' which promotes fusions of research beyond the institutes. Faculty members primarily responsible for ICCER are actively involved in education and research at the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology. World prominent external researchers are also involved as distinguished visiting professors. We provide an education and research environment that is at the world's highest level.

The Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Science and Technology is seeking individuals who strive to be actively involved in research in cutting edge science and technology, individuals who aspire to become a highly skilled specialist or researcher in the world's leading science and technology, and individuals who have acquired specialized knowledge and ability to promote research through active learning in university master's programs and industry.
