We will explore a new world of life sciences through innovative interdisciplinary research, disseminate new findings to the world, and contribute to the health promotion of people around the globe.
Since 2014, the Institute for Biomedical Sciences, Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research, Shinshu University, had been developing interdisciplinary research focused on medical and agricultural collaboration for 6-year second stage following its inaugural 5-year first stage. With the conclusion of the second stage in March 2025, it has been transformed into a new Institute for Biomedical Sciences, belonging to Research Cluster for Social Implementation, Shinshu University, starting this April. Our main scientific goal remains unchanged: to continue promoting comprehensive life sciences research, disseminating new findings worldwide, and focusing on nurturing young researchers who will lead the next generation. However, we will gather the knowledge and techniques in bioscience accumulated over the past 11 years and focus on activities that address the urgent challenge of an ultra-aging society, specifically the exploration of biological changes associated with aging (aging bioscience) and the regeneration research of cells and tissues that have degenerated or been damaged due to aging. Additionally, leveraging the benefits of an organizational structure that includes both basic researchers in medicine, agriculture, and engineering, as well as clinical physicians, we will strive to apply the results obtained from basic research to clinical applications (social implementation) as quickly as possible. We aim to promote research on the discovery of new bioactive substances from familiar foods and microorganisms, and address issues related to food safety and food shortages that directly impact human health. Through the social implementation of our research results, we hope to contribute to the health promotion of everyone around the world, from children to adults and the elderly, including both healthy individuals and those with existing disabilities or illnesses (inclusive healthcare).
