Financial Support for Graduate Students

On and after April 2012,Global COE course details and special measures (financial support) changes my occur.

Special Measures of “International Fiber Engineering Course”

Shinshu University Global COE has been selected as one of the Global COEs (in the field of chemistry and material science) in 2007, under a program title of “International Center of Excellence on Fiber Engineering” in the period of Year 2007 to 2011.


The objectives of the Global COE Program are to further strengthen the education and research capabilities of graduate schools in Japan and to train creative researchers who can lead the world in cutting edge research environment by establishing internationally competitive universities in Japan through strategic support of world-class education and research centers.


Therefore, the program, “International Center of Excellence on Fiber Engineering” aims at fostering excellent young researchers who are world-leading in the field of fiber engineering. In addition, the “International Fiber Engineering” course was established for the students in the “Department of Bioscience and Textile Technology” and other students attending Ueda Campus to be an international hub for research, education, and human resources in the discipline of “Fiber Engineering.” Students who complete the course subjects are conferred with a Certificate. The University implements special measures as an assistance for the students who take the course as listed below.


  • You will be acknowledged as registered student(s) of International Fiber Engineering Course and be eligible to receive the following special measures after submitting “Global COE Application for Research” sheets.
  1. About one million and two hundred thousand yen (JPY1.2 million) is granted to qualified student(s) per year as a Research Assistant (RA) salary.
    (Unqualified students: Adult students, government-sponsored foreign students, students in the extended study program, students who are sponsored by another big project, and take a leave of absence from school, and do not attend full-time in Ueda Campus due to carrying on research at other institute.)
  2. Establish special quota who are qualified to tuition exemption as a university-driven assistance.
    (Unqualified students: Students who are on the register more than 3 years, adult students, government-sponsored foreign students, students in the extended study program, students who take a leave of absence from school.)
  3. To enhance self-reliant research, approximately JPY500,000 of research fund per annum is provided.
    *The above-mentioned amount is subjected to change every year according to the budget granted by the government.
    (Unqualified students: Students who receives education by the special measures of educational methods laid down in the standards for establishing graduate schools.)
  4. In order to encourage giving presentations at the international conferences, registration fees and traveling expenses are supported.
  5. English-proofreading and publication fees are provided when students submit their research achievement to international academic journals.
  6. Giving a support for a long-term overseas dispatch.

As for the above 1, 2, and 3, the amount to be provided is determined based on individual mid-term performance evaluation each year.


  • As for 3 - 5 above, adult students who sign up for “International Fiber Engineering Course” are qualified to receive these supports. (However, the education under the special measures of educational method set forth by the standard for establishing graduate schools is not carried out.)
  • As for 1 – 6 above, these measures are applicable based on selection process after submission of application documents.
  • Students are requested to take lectures delivered in English and to make efforts to improve communication skills including foreign language and presentation skills.
