Shinshu University and Nagoya University Global COE Joint Symposium in Ueda
The 5th Nagoya University - UCLA International Symposium

The proposal from Nagoya University, Nagoya University’s GCOE “Education and Research of Micro-Nano Mechatronics” and Shinshu University GCOE “International Center of Excellence of Fiber Engineering” decided to hold a joint symposium co-hosted by the University of California, Los Angeles.
This symposium has been held annually between Nagoya University GCOE and UCLA every year and this is the 5th time. Nagoya University GCOE which research field related to mechatronics, but also has track record of nano-biomaterials and micro-scale systems which overlap in Shinshu University, FTST GCOE research field. Therefore we have decided to hold joint symposium.
This is the Shinshu University GCOE’s first attempt to hold symposium unite with different fields of University. For using this great opportunity, we will connect with different fields of chemical materials and mechatronics university as well as to promote reinforcement international relationship with UCLA.

About COE for Education and Research of Micro-Nano Mechatronics
Our Center strives to foster “young researchers who dare to challenge unexploited fields” by building a novel interdisciplinary field based on micro-nano mechatronics. This field will promote “the world-highest-level of micro-nano mechatronics research with an emphasis on originality” from a viewpoint of not only the acquisition of advanced technology, but also social issues. To promote our program, the Department of Micro-Nano Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, which has been a forerunner in the micro-machine field in the world, will play a central role, and top researchers in the fields of advanced materials, mechanical science, system measurement/control engineering, and advanced bio-medicine will work together. Our Center aims not only to create novel functional materials and advanced mechatronics, but also to discover breakthroughs in next-generation medicine. Utilizing UCLA and our affiliate international education and research environments, our program will cultivate “interdisciplinary research leaders who are internationally competitive” and can promote applications of micro-nano mechatronics, an advanced bio-medical field.

Shinshu University GCOE Program < Academic disciplines: Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering> (Selected in 2007)
International Center of Excellence on Fiber Engineering
Inherit, develop, and deepen the previous accomplishments of the 21st Century COE Advanced Fiber Engineering Education and Research Center; integrate conventional fiber engineering and cutting-edge science and technology; promote on the basis of international collaboration a far-reaching fiber engineering field extending from the generation of new nano-fibers through the elucidation of molecular-level structure control to the generation of technologies for fiber manufacturing, KANSEI assessment, and resource recycling through the generation of sophisticated hybrid functionality by means of multidimensional hierarchical structure control; and create lifestyles and culture that affect all aspects of life.
The purpose of our Center is to contribute to the development of the textile industry by developing researchers and engineers with first-rate, internationally recognized competence through cutting–edge research activities in the field of fiber engineering and, as a core international education and research base, to establish functions that can be utilized as personal and technology networks and functions that will make it an information hub.
