During the middle ages, the relationship between the Buddha’s omniscience and his religious authority was a major issue in Buddhist thought. One of the most extensive and sophisticated discussions on this topic is found in the Pramāṇavārttikālaṅkārabhāṣya, the magnum opus of the eighth-century Buddhist master Prajñākargupta. In this study, Shinya Moriyama combines philological acumen with philosophical analysis to present Prajñākargupta’s innovative ideas, offering thereby an important introduction to his religious thought in its historical context of post-Dharmakīrtian Buddhist epistemology.

　2006年にウィーン大学に提出した博士論文を大幅に加筆・修正し、本書が出来上がりました。版下からレイアウトまで一切をこちらで行いましたので、不体裁なところもあるかと思います。 　提出してからすぐに出版準備を進めたものの、思うように時間がとれず、ずるずると時だけが過ぎ去った７年間…。2012年に指導教員であるEli Franco先生が来日された折、この出版社を勧めてくだされたところから、ようやく本腰を入れて作業を開始いたしました。 　博士論文については、見直せば見直すほど、別の解釈の可能性が見えたり、論述の不備が見つかったりで、なかなか思うようには進みません。最終的にできあがった本書についても、すでにいくつもの誤植やミス（博論段階の理解が正しかった個所など）が見つかっております。いずれまとまった正誤表を出します。 　思い返せば、このテーマに取り組むきっかけになったのは、2001年に東京大学にて小野卓也くんと二人、プラジュニャーカラグプタの主宰神論を読んでみよう、という読書会を行ったことでした。「この個所は分からないねぇ」が口癖だった私のあいまいな読み方に、根気よくつきあってくれた小野くんには、本当に感謝しています。 　その後、すぐにウィーン大学への留学が決まり、フランコ先生とともにこの個所をゼミナールその他で読解しました。私の英語力、テキストの理解能力などに問題がああっため、当初予定していたPVABh ad PV II 8-33全体のテキスト校訂・訳注研究ではなく、重要な議論が集中する8-10, 29-33の注釈に限定しての研究になりました。 　残されたPVABh ad PV II 11-28についても、テキスト校訂と訳注研究は準備しています。いずれ公刊し、プラジュニャーカラグプタ研究に貢献したいと思います。 　ここに至るまでにお世話になったすべての方々に感謝です。
