Overview

The goal of the Department of Science and Technology is to cultivate in its students the ability to approach problems in the applied and interdisciplinary fields of science, technology, and agriculture from a broad range of different perspectives.

Features

In the Department of Science and Technology, in addition to in-depth knowledge and technical skills in each specialized field, students will also acquire knowledge of other areas related to their specialized field and an overall fundamental knowledge of the fields of science, technology, and agriculture. They will develop an interest in the synergy between scientific technology and environmental conservation, as they become highly skilled engineers able to pursue research and development in the area of interdisciplinary technologies in an international context. In order to do so, in addition to specialized courses in each field, students will take (4 units of) Departmental common subjects.

Philosophy and Goals

The educational and research goals of the Department of Science and Technology are to cultivate a future workforce of Ph.D.-holding scientists and engineers with a solid grounding in the fundamentals of science and technology. They will have a deep interest in harmonizing scientific technology and environmental conservation, in the improvement of people's welfare, in contributing to the progress of scientific technology, and in nurturing and revitalizing industry. Besides in-depth and advanced expert knowledge and outstanding technical skills in science and technology, they will possess a comprehensive vision and insight, along with a sound sense of ethics and the ability to apply their skills by conducting essential cutting-edge research in science and technology in order to achieve their goals.

Skills Instilled

In addition to the common comprehensive vision and sound ethical perspective acquired at this Graduate School, the following common skills will also be acquired over the course of a program designed to produce highly skilled, expert engineers and researchers able to contribute to society and possessing in-depth knowledge and technical skills in science, technology, and agriculture combined with the ability to respond flexibly to societal changes

Curriculum Policy

Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Science and Technology will implement the following highly specialized curriculum consisting of lectures, lessons, experiments, and practicums according to the following curriculum policy centered on dissertation writing with the goal of attaining in-depth knowledge, outstanding technical skills, insight, and the ability to apply the skills required to become a highly skilled professional or researcher in the fields of science, technology, and agriculture.

  • In addition to the establishment of the classes required to achieve the educational goals of this Department, a research guidance plan will be formulated along with the organization of a systematic curriculum that will organically lead from coursework to dissertation writing.
  • In organizing the curriculum, specialized subjects will be offered to help students attain in-depth expert knowledge and outstanding technical skills in the divisions of the Department.
  • Leveraging the fact that this Department comprises a wide range of academic divisions, Departmental common classes, covering subjects beyond the Units or Divisions, will be offered to ensure a balance of expertise and comprehensiveness in students and so that they can acquire insight and the ability to apply their skills.

Diploma Policy

Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Science and Technology will award a doctoral degree to students who have sufficiently developed the following knowledge and capabilities required by the degree-granting policy issued by each Division.
