Department of Medical Sciences

Overview

The Department of Medical Sciences comprises two Divisions: the Medical Science Division and the Health Science Division.
The goal of this Department is to produce medical professionals with an enriched sense of humanity and advanced fundamental and clinical research skills who can contribute to the development of medicine and health sciences in this country as well as the healthy life expectancy of its residents.

Features

The Department of Medical Sciences is characterized by the fact that doctors graduating from the Medical Science Course and obtaining undergraduate degrees in medicine, researchers completing graduate degrees in Medical Science and obtaining master's degrees in medicine, and other health professionals, such as nurses, midwives, public health nurses, clinical technicians, physiotherapists, and occupational therapists completing master's degrees in Health Sciences, all belong to the same Department. Students are therefore able to conduct research across a broad range of different subjects, looking at a variety of issues facing the medical field with specialists approaching the issues from the perspective of their different occupations.
In addition, with regard to research ethics education, at this University, which plays a central role in the CITI-Japan project, bioethics education is taken as a common subject throughout the Department of Medical Sciences. This allows us to cultivate medical researchers, highly skilled medical professionals, and highly skilled healthcare professionals who have high ethical standards and a rich sense of humanity along with the ability to solve clinical problems by applying their advanced expertise and techniques, and using scientific evidence.

Philosophy and Goals

The educational and research goal of the Department of Medical Sciences is to cultivate medical professionals who have a constant concern for the welfare of mankind and an awareness of developments in medicine and healthcare, who at the same time undertake comprehensive medical research reaching beyond the boundaries of medicine and healthcare, and who can undertake creative, cutting-edge research as global leaders with sound ethics and in-depth, advanced expert knowledge, outstanding technical skills and clinical research abilities, comprehensive vision, insight, and the ability to apply those skills, thus contributing to the development of medicine and health sciences in Japan as well as to extending the healthy life expectancy of its citizens.

In addition to the common comprehensive vision and sound ethical perspective acquired at this Graduate School, the following will also be acquired as common required skills in order to train capable, highly skilled medical professionals and researchers who can contribute to society and possess in-depth knowledge and skills in each specialized field of medical and health science combined with the ability to respond flexibly to societal changes.

Curriculum Policy

Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Medical Sciences will implement the following highly specialized curriculum consisting of lectures, lessons, experiments, and practicums designed according to the following curriculum policy that centers on dissertation writing with the goal of attaining in-depth knowledge, outstanding technical skills, insight, and the ability to apply skills on a par with global standards, all of which is essential for highly skilled professionals and researchers in medicine and health sciences.

  • In addition to the establishment of the classes required to achieve the educational goals of this Department, the formulation of a research guidance plan and the organization of a systematic curriculum.
  • The curriculum will include specialized subjects offered by each departmental division to help students attain in-depth expert knowledge and outstanding technical skills in the divisions of the Department.
  • Common subjects will be offered both by the Department and the various Divisions so that students can acquire insight and the ability to apply their skills without bias towards their own field of specialization.

Diploma Policy

Pursuant to the educational goals of the Graduate School and the Department, the Department of Medial Sciences will award a doctoral degree to students who have sufficiently developed the following knowledge and capabilities and possess the knowledge and capabilities required by the degree-granting policy issued by each Division.

  • In-depth knowledge and outstanding technical skills on a par with global standards in one's specialized field of research in medicine or health sciences.
  • The insight to perceive the essence of problems beyond the framework of fundamental, applied, or clinical medical and health science research and to then solve these problems.
  • The ability to apply one's skills to produce new findings and technologies in areas related to one's specialized fields of medical and health science research.
