The Department of Agriculture undertakes education and research of leading-edge life science, food science, and environmental science based on agriculture, to realize a rich human society. This department has the education and research philosophy to foster scientists and advanced professional human resources who have wide-ranging, systematic, basic academic skills, practical technological capabilities, and research and development capabilities in the agricultural field that supports life, food, and the environment to realize richer human societies based on environment-friendly sustainable production and who have the capability to create innovation. This department has the education and research goals to foster human resources who have practical technological capabilities and creative research and development capabilities to develop the interdisciplinary leading-edge fields of agriculture for coexistence with the natural environment.

  • Human resources who can contribute to leading-edge life science research and education development through linkage with regions, industries, and foreign countries, in the course of rapid development of life science in the agricultural field
  • Human resources who have a wide knowledge and skills of biotechnology for realizing a healthy and long-lived society, and a sustainable society, and can address life-phenomenon molecule-level unraveling and useful biofunction searching, functional analysis of disease-preventive food resources, and development and invention of functional foods
  • Human resources who can effectively use bioresources to establish the living-object and food resource production technology for sustainable society creation, and can create the theories and technologies for food safety and quality improvement and material cycle improvement
  • Advanced professionals who will become active in public offices, research institutions, and companies related to regional revitalization through the rich natural environment of Shinshu and close cooperation with regions, and have problem-solving and planning capabilities

  • Leading-edge research capability in life science field for animal, plant, microbe, and fungus resource development, molecular structure analysis, structure-activity relationship analysis, and genome expression and function analysis, considering interdisciplinary fields such as medicine and pharmacy

  • Research execution capabilities for health promotion and food-resource sustainable use
  • Professional knowledge and research capabilities for unraveling animal and plant resources (which are the fundamentals of food production) from ecological, physiological, and cytohistological viewpoints), characterized by wide knowledge and skills of agriculture, acquired by research and education in both field work and laboratory work in the rich natural environment of Shinshu

Curriculum Policy

The Department of Agriculture, with the philosophy and goals of this department, provides professional knowledge and skills as the basis of agriculture, through the curriculum of field-common subjects (for interdisciplinary, fundamental knowledge), advanced courses and special exercises (for professional knowledge), and special experimental practices (for experimental skills). In these courses, you will acquire problem-solving capability, communication capability, and presentation capability, and will deepen your professional skills. In addition, through individual guides by advising teachers, you will improve the expertise by executing the pursuit of problems, research planning, execution, problem solving, consideration, reference document retrieval, etc. Then you will establish the comprehensive capability of an advanced professional regarding agriculture, by performing master's thesis writing, presentation, etc.

The Department of Agriculture will grant degrees to students who have adequate levels of the following knowledge and capabilities and the knowledge and capabilities satisfying the degree-granting policy determined for each field and unit, according to the graduate school and this department:
