Shinshu University Faculty of Agriculture Welcomes Guests from California State University, Chico

In October 2024, the Faculty of Agriculture at Shinshu University had the honor of hosting two distinguished guests from California State University, Chico, a valued partner in the Global Development Capability Enhancement Project.

On October 21, Professor Eric Houk from the College of Agriculture visited the Faculty of Agriculture to explore potential exchange programs and learn more about Shinshu University. His visit included a productive meeting with faculty members, followed by a guided campus tour.

From October 28 to November 2, Professor Brimlow, a Professor of Agricultural Business, visited the Faculty of Agriculture. Since 2023, Professor Brimlow and our faculty have collaborated on a Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program focused on comparing local food systems in California and Japan. This ongoing program highlights shared educational goals and fosters deeper mutual understanding. Moreover, in the summer of 2024, five students from the Faculty of Agriculture participated in a three-week study program at Chico State, where they gained valuable insights into Northern California's agriculture and local food systems.

During his visit, Professor Brimlow engaged in discussions with the Dean and faculty members, toured the university farm, and visited local factories and food businesses. His academic interests include food supply chain, and local food culture which align closely with some of the Faculty of Agriculture's educational objectives. Discussions about developing additional exchange opportunities, including a faculty-led short program for Chico State students, are now underway.

Professors Brimlow and Houk's visits are expected to deepen our collaboration with California State University, Chico, and open new avenues for academic and cultural exchange.

We look forward to continuing this fruitful partnership and sharing updates on our growing international collaborations and innovative academic initiatives.
