In the words of a mentor (Specially Appointed Professor Mikihiko Miura)

I spend a lot of time with the program's students, and I offer advice about how to handle a variety of issues related to research as well as everyday life. Compared to their counterparts at normal graduate school programs, our students have taken on a difficult task, and they work hard day in and day out to achieve their goals. They are like family members to me-precious children whom I hope will turn into true leaders and splendid human beings. Things like nationality, religion, and gender don't matter. I enjoy being able to spend time with these students while imagining how they will transcend the barriers of language, custom, and culture to help bring about a fiber renaissance at some point, somewhere in the world.
