Shinshu-University Globalization Plan

In a rapidly globalizing and ever-shrinking world, Shinshu University aims to construct and further strengthen its internationally competitive centers for education and research based on the concept of Shinshu "Forest of Knowledge" through the inheritance of knowledge and creation of new forms of knowledge.

In order to achieve this, in addition to developing global professionals with the capabilities needed to function in the international arena, Shinshu University also initiates distinctive world class research centering on outstanding research achievements that have been met with global acclaim.

Furthermore, as well as taking a proactive stance in accepting international students and providing them with increased opportunities to find employment in Japanese society, helping to train international professionals and foster intercultural understanding, the university also seeks to bring together foreign nationals and Japanese citizens living in the local area in an organic manner, promoting Shinshu's development from the perspective of multicultural cooperation under the keywords of diversity and collaboration.

Developing global professionals with the capabilities required to function in the international arena

Shinshu University aims to construct internationally recognized high quality education systems as part of its goal to develop capable professionals who are able to play a wide range of roles in the international community.

① Lay down the foundations for accepting a diverse range of cultures and ideas from around the world.

  • Foster multicultural understanding through common education strands including culture, history and language.

② Develop highly skilled professionals with the capacity to flourish in the international arena

  • In addition to basic capabilities as a member of society, develop professionals with superlative language skills, information gathering skills, analytical skills, and ability to understand other cultures.
  • Develop professionals with a wide range of practical abilities that enable them to perform diverse roles in global society, including communication skills, the ability to form judgments, the ability to make decisions, negotiation skills and adaptability.
  • Put in place an environment which prepares students for dealing with an increasingly internationalized society and which helps them acquire an international outlook. (Increase the range of opportunities for encountering other cultures, such as intercultural salons, foreign exchange events and other experiences.)

③ Establish and enhance educational programs and educational content that improves students' standing within the international community

  • Examine educational programs from the perspective of improving the international standing of degrees. (GPA, numbering, revision of academic year calendar etc.)
  • Increased adoption of education (lectures, seminars etc.) taught in foreign languages such as English.
  • Improve international communication skills through practical language education in English etc.
  • Increase the university's international visibility by translating materials (syllabuses, study guides etc.) into English and other languages, and strategically communicating information via the website.

Development as a center for nurturing international professionals and creating connections, and for initiating education to promote intercultural understanding

Shinshu University seeks to stimulate interaction between enthusiastic, outstanding international students and leading researchers, and to become a center for nurturing international professionals and creating connections, as well as for initiating education to promote intercultural understanding.

① Accept more international students and researchers to the university, and encourage more students and teaching staff from the university to study or work overseas

  • Promote plans to accept international students and researchers to the university, taking into consideration such things as the current era of internationalization and the government's "300,000 International Students Plan."
  • Put in place systems and environments for accepting more international students and researchers to the university, and for encouraging more students and teaching staff from the university to study or work overseas.
  • Ensure that sufficient internal training systems are in place for improving the international response capabilities and organizational skills of teaching staff.

② Increased collaboration with universities in Japan and overseas

  • Construct multilayered networks of exchange by developing strategic agreements, strengthening friendly relations and participating in inter university networks.
  • Give substance to activities through such means as expanding double degree systems with partner universities, implementing international exchange events, and encouraging interaction between students and teaching staff.

③ Active support for the internationalization of local communities to enable coexistence with foreign nationals in local communities with diverse forms of culture

  • Cooperate in providing active support for activities which promote understanding of different cultures among local residents through education promoting international understanding, intercultural understanding and interaction between international students and local residents.
  • Improve international public relations activities (including the university's website).
  • Construct international student networks.

Promotion of world class research

Shinshu University aims to construct internationally recognized high quality education systems as part of its goal to develop capable professionals who are able to play a wide range of roles in the international community.

① Construction of global centers for pioneering research based on a world class infrastructure of research

  • Create centers for research and social contributions through the Global Aqua Innovation Center, selected as a key center for COI STREAM, and promote creative research centering on the fields of fiber engineering and materials science.

② Create networks for collaboration and research between universities and education and research facilities in Japan and overseas focusing on radical transdisciplinary research groups

  • Aim to assemble research capabilities in strong and distinctive fields and maintain and improve on a sophisticated level of internationally recognized research.
  • Invite prominent researchers from overseas and construct networks of researchers so as to accelerate the progress of research from a global perspective.
  • Proactively pursue consigned research and collaborative research with institutes in Japan and overseas.

③ Develop the next generation of key researchers

  • Employ and train professionals who are blessed with international perspectives and expertise.
  • Put in place environments and training systems for developing distinguished young researchers.

④ Improve the university's presence in Japan and overseas

  • Generate awareness of the university's research achievements in Japan and overseas through the publication of papers in internationally esteemed journals and presentations at conferences.
  • In addition to reinforcing support systems through URA (Research Administrator) and strategically acquiring external funding, actively implement international collaborative research.
