Succeeding silicon (Si), carbon is defined as a material of the 21st century. We have developed the structure of the research institute and are vigorously undertaking our work with the aim of being among the world's top level of research institutes for basic and applied carbon science. Our aim is to cultivate new technologies and materials to form the core competence of local industry as well as Japanese industry, to provide the world's top level of education in this field, and to contribute to the advancement of education and research in the university. In our research institute we carry out fundamental and applied research such as the synthesis of nanocarbon and fundamental evaluation, to achieve improvements in the properties and performance of composite materials, contributing to a wide range of fields such as environment, energy, resources, biomedical, ICT, etc., which are the fundamental technologies of the 21st century. We are steadily accumulating results producing the expected 21st century carbon innovation.
