Message from the Director

More than 10 years have passed since the Shinshu University Museum of Natural Sciences opened in August 2012. During this time, we have received valuable specimens donated by local residents, further enhancing our collection. We hold outdoor study sessions for the general public several times a year, which are attended by many. We also welcome visits from children and students in the city in particular during our regular opening hours. Our Museum exists thanks to the warm support and cooperation of the local community and students, and we would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude to them.
The Museum of Natural Science owns approximately 400,000 plant specimens, which are being steadily registered in an international database in cooperation with the National Museum of Nature and Science. Recently, the museum has been using the stuffed ptarmigan, an unparalleled number of specimens in Japan, and alpine plant specimens for genetic analysis research. With a focus on these research results, we will actively create opportunities to widely publicize the museum's activities, such as satellite exhibitions at off-campus facilities. In addition, with the cooperation of students from our university, the museum's exhibits are being improved little by little. We will continue to do so in the future so that you can see even more fulfilling exhibits.
Although we are a small natural science museum in Shinshu, we will strive to become a museum that is loved by the local community and allows visitors to experience the rich nature of Shinshu through our activities.
