1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
I decided to come to Shinshu University School of Medicine because of my long-standing interest in Japan. This interest grew from my passion for Japanese culture, both popular aspects such as anime, manga, films, and lifestyle, as well as more traditional elements including religion, philosophy, the relationship with nature, and everyday customs.
From an academic perspective, I was particularly drawn to the opportunity to train in sports medicine, a field that is not easily accessible in Italy but is highly developed at Shinshu University. During my stay, I had the chance to approach advanced techniques such as VO₂ max measurement and to learn about innovative training methods like interval walking training. Moreover, I was able to deepen my understanding of physiology, especially in the area of thermoregulation.
2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
My training at the host department was composed of a combination of fieldwork, laboratory studies, and office-based research. In the field, I was able to directly experience the practical application of interval walking training in several fitness facilities across Nagano Prefecture. In the laboratory, I participated in studies on cooling wear, both under controlled conditions and in vivo through the ascent of Mount Kurohime, which provided valuable insight into physiological responses in real environments. This was complemented by research activities in the office, which allowed me to analyze and reflect on the data collected and to integrate practical experiences with theoretical knowledge.
3. Please list what you have gained from your experiences through the training at Shinshu University and the stay in Matsumoto, Japan.
Through my experience at Shinshu University and my stay in Matsumoto, I was able to engage with an environment radically different from the one I was accustomed to. Although this was my first experience in research, it was highly formative in helping me develop the ability to communicate effectively within an international academic setting.
Beyond the academic sphere, I also gained valuable personal growth. Living in Matsumoto allowed me to appreciate a different lifestyle and cultural context, while meeting people from various nationalities broadened my perspective and opened my mind to new ways of thinking. Overall, this experience strengthened both my academic skills and my intercultural understanding, making it an important step in my personal and professional development.
4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
I believe that through this experience I have developed a more proactive and independent attitude in managing my work. At the same time, I also realized the importance of openly discussing my doubts and difficulties with my supervisors and colleagues. I understood that I am not alone, but rather supported by an environment that is genuinely committed to my well-being and academic success. These lessons will be very valuable for my future career, as they will help me both to adapt to different professional contexts and to work more effectively within collaborative settings.
