1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
As a medical student eager to make the most of my pre-clinical years, I sought international clinical training opportunities and discovered the elective program at Shinshu University through my university's student organization. After passing a competitive selection process, I chose Shinshu as my top preference, influenced by strong testimonials from seniors and my own research into its academic strengths. I was particularly drawn to the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery due to my deep interest in a field that blends surgical precision with meaningful impact on patients' lives. My time here has provided valuable clinical exposure and exceeded my expectations both academically and personally.

2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
During my clinical training at the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, I was actively involved in a wide range of clinical activities, including morning rounds, outpatient consultations, preoperative planning, and surgical procedures. This was my first time entering an operating room, and I had the opportunity to learn and perform sterile techniques directly under supervision. One of the most valuable and memorable aspects of my experience was being allowed to assist the surgeons during operations, which included skin grafts, flap reconstructions, facial fracture repairs, and corrective procedures for congenital anomalies. Each case introduced me to different surgical techniques and clinical considerations, many of which I encountered for the first time.

I was also involved in patient care throughout their surgical journey from preoperative assessments to postoperative monitoring, which deepened my appreciation for the holistic and multidisciplinary nature of plastic surgery. Beyond the clinical experience, I was fortunate to be surrounded by kind and dedicated doctors who generously guided me and served as true role models for my future in medicine. Their professionalism, compassion, and teaching spirit left a strong impression on me. Additionally, I had the rare opportunity to accompany the department to a professional conference held in Ina City, which further enriched my exposure to the academic and collaborative side of the surgical field.

Overall, this training experience was profoundly inspiring and has strengthened both my passion for plastic and reconstructive surgery and my motivation to continue learning and growing in this path. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Professor Yuzuriha, Dr. Yanagisawa, Dr. Tsunekawa, Dr. Takashimizu, Dr. Nao, Dr. Noguchi, and all the doctors in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. I am truly thankful for their kindness, guidance, and willingness to teach me new concepts and introduce me to a variety of fascinating procedures throughout my training.

I am also sincerely grateful to the residents Dr. Risa, Dr. Yuta, Dr. Fujita, Dr. Maekawa, Dr. Nana, and all other residents and staff involved, who patiently guided and supported me every step of the way. Their dedication, encouragement, and generosity have made my clinical experience not only meaningful but also truly inspiring.

3. Please list what you have gained from your experiences through the training at Shinshu University and the stay in Matsumoto, Japan.
Through my training at Shinshu University, I was exposed to an entirely new level of clinical experience, especially within the operating room. It was my first time being directly involved in surgical procedures, and I had the rare opportunity to assist hands-on in various reconstructive surgeries. Every operation I participated in taught me something new whether in technique, surgical judgment, or teamwork in the OR. I found myself deeply engaged in each procedure, as no two cases were ever the same. The uniqueness of every surgery inspired me to stay curious, focused, and always ready to learn.

Throughout the training, I communicated with doctors in English and basic Japanese, and gradually learned to use simple Japanese phrases when interacting with patients. This helped me build stronger connections and also pushed me to become more confident and proactive in clinical discussions. I also began practicing different types of surgical sutures, learning both the techniques and the reasoning behind each one. These experiences not only sharpened my clinical skills but also encouraged me to think more critically and systematically as a future physician.

Living in Matsumoto was a truly refreshing and peaceful experience. The city's cool climate and serene atmosphere provided an ideal environment for both study and personal reflection. I especially enjoyed exploring the city on foot, taking in the charming streets and the beautiful natural surroundings. One of my favorite places was Matsumoto Castle, where I had the chance to experience vibrant summer festivals that showcased local traditions and community spirit. These moments not only allowed me to appreciate Japanese culture more deeply but also helped me feel connected to the city and its people. Overall, living in Matsumoto taught me the value of slowing down, observing the details around me, and finding joy in simple, everyday experiences.

4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
I am deeply interested in returning to Shinshu University in the future to pursue further studies because of its excellent educational system and advanced medical facilities. During my training, I was particularly impressed by the opportunity to learn microsurgical techniques, which sparked my passion even more. The high standard of teaching combined with access to cutting-edge technology makes Shinshu an ideal place for me to develop specialized skills in plastic and reconstructive surgery. I believe that continuing my education here will significantly support my long-term career goals and help me become a skilled surgeon capable of delivering the best care to my patients.

For anyone considering clinical training at Shinshu University, I genuinely encourage you to pursue it. This program provides an exceptional opportunity to be immersed in a high-quality medical environment, where students are welcomed, guided, and actively involved in various clinical settings. To make the most of your experience, I suggest familiarizing yourself with some basic Japanese especially for communicating with patients and navigating daily life.
