1. What made you come train at Shinshu University School of Medicine and how did you find the School through your stay?
Studying abroad has always been my dream, I want to further develop my knowledge and skills in a new place, and also experience living abroad. I immediately got interested when I saw the information in my university about this student exchange opportunity and I decided to apply. Fortunately, I got the chances and I chose pediatrics clinical training because I'm interested in pediatrics.
2. Please describe your training at host department/lab.
In pediatric department, we start with ward round every morning. Then I usually go to the outpatient clinic or observe any kind of procedure in that day such as bone marrow aspiration or intrathecal injection. In the afternoon, we have team meetings to discuss about the patient's new test results and to recheck the treatment regimen. I got to train in various divisions including hematology-oncology, gastroenterology, cardiology, and neonatology in the NICU, each with its own unique procedure and Im grateful to be able to see and do those things firsthand.
3. Please list what you have gained from your experiences through the training at Shinshu University and the stay in Matsumoto, Japan.
I have gained various insights and experiences during my exchange period at Shinshu University. Not only insights about medicine such as the patient's diagnosis and management & breakthrough medicine technology and research, but also experiences Japanese culture firsthand in various aspects daily. I learned a lot about new ways of thinking that could be applied for my future as a doctor.
4. How do you think you can apply those experiences to your future career?
In the academic side, I can apply a lot of knowledges that I've gained during my stay which was about patient's approach in the diagnosis and treatment. I learned a lot about how to diagnose the patient through physical examination, supportive tests, and also considering various differential diagnosis especially in pediatric cases. I also could apply my experiences to my daily life and how I should be a doctor from the daily life of doctors in Shinshu.
5. Advice to those who are interested in studying at Shinshu University
Be brave and open to experience anything while you can! I'm forever grateful of the experiences I've gained here, and if I got the chance I'd say I would do it again. From a month stay, I gained so much and caused me to develop and utilize my potential greatly. And don't worry about being in a new place, because in Shinshu I feel so welcomed by everyone.
