Summary of Activity

CLINICAL MAIN PROJECTS

The Division of Cardiovascular Surgery

   1. Complete coronary revascularization (CABG) for patients with ischemic heart disease, and improvement of cardiac function by bone marrow implantation.
   2. Improvement of QOL with preservation of patient’s own valve by repair and Maze procedure in valvular heart disease.
   3. Development of surgical and regenerative therapeutic modality for improvement of QOL in patients with congestive heart disease.
   4. Improvement of operative results in thoracic aortic surgery especially for the elderly and aortic rupture.
   5. Establishment of less invasive surgical treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysm with minimally invasive surgery and endovascular treatment.
   6. Promotion of less invasive hybrid therapy combination with intravascular therapy and surgical revascularization for peripheral arterial disease.

The Division of Thoracic Surgery

   1. Limited surgery for early lung cancer (ex. radical segmentectomy or partial resection)
   2. Minimal invasive surgery, including VATS, for lung cancer
   3. Extended radical surgery for advanced lung cancer
   4. Neo-adjuvant therapy for advanced lung cancer
   5. Adjuvant therapy for lung cancer
   6. Integrated therapy for epithelial thymic tumor
   7. Videoscopic total thymectomy
   8. Integrated therapy for malignant mesothelioma
   9. Lung volume reduction surgery for advanced emphysema
  10. Establishment of educational program in VATS for residents

The Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery

   1. Comprehensive treatment for all forms and stages of breast cancer
   2. Comprehensive treatment for all forms and stages of thyroid cancer
   3. Comprehensive treatment for all forms parathyroid diease
   4. Stereotactic vacuum-assisted core needle biopsy (Mammotome)

Research Projects

CURRENT RESEARCH TOPICS
(see also http://www.shinshu-u.ac.jp/graduate/medicine/master/m-science/geka.html)

Our major topics of research are surgical oncology, gene therapy, regeneration therapy, organ transplantation, artificial organ, and response to surgical intervention. Our goal is to perform translational research from bench to bed side in the broad spectrum of interdisciplinary approach.

Surgical Oncology Group

   1. Mechanism of tumorigenesis
   2. The relation of gene expression and the clinical results in cancer
   3. Mechanism of tolerance of cancer to anti-cancer drugs
   4. Anaerobic bacteria for cancer gene therapy (see also http://www.anaeropharma.co.jp/index_e.html)[i1]
   5. Cardiac tumor

Transplantation-Regeneration Therapy Group

   1. Development of regeneration therapy for ischemic legs and myocardium using bone marrow transplantation and anaerobic bacteria
   2. Mechanism and prevention of chronic cardiac rejection
   3. Development of less invasive cardiopulmonary bypass system

Response to Surgical Intervention Group

   1. Mechanism of lung injury and development of method to prevent it
   2. Developement of new devise and material for VATS.
