The Nagano engineering campus is located in Wakasato, Nagano city. The Faculty of Engineering has nurtured ecologically-minded engineers since setting up the department of Environmental Science and Technology in 1998, with the aim to foster engineers who can build a society by balancing science and technology with environmental concerns as stated in the faculty principals.
Since 2000 the Nagano Engineering campus students, faculties and Co-op staff have established and developed an ecological campus through activities to foster ecologically-minded engineers over the entire faculty.
In May 2001, for the first time at a national university and graduate school, the campus was certified according to ISO 14001 - the International Environment Management System standard.
This practical environment education attempt was adopted as the 2004 Distinctive University Education Support Program by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and won the Prize for Excellent College in the 2006 Global Environment Awards.

Research regarding the quality improvement of discharged water from the co-op cafeteria
(ISO Environment Management Student Committee)
Since being established in 2000, the ISO Environmental Management Student Committee has played an important role in performing ISO 14001 activities by plotting out standards to separate renewable resources from waste applied over all ecological campuses, researching the actual rate of waste separation accomplishment, designing and repairing trash bins situated outside the buildings, providing environment education to the general student population and participating in internal audits.
Furthermore, the committee studied the design of trash bins to improve waste separation rates, verified the outcome on campus, and presented the results at an academic conference. The committee also promotes research regarding the quality improvement of discharged water from the co-op cafeteria and of the regional rivers.
To boost students' awareness of the environment, the committee is active in CO2 reduction activities by posting seasonal messages on the 6 information boards situated around the campus, and runs a website to communicate its environmental activity information to the public.
The Faculty of Engineering ISO 14001 Environmental Management Student Committee has expanded their step-by-step ecological activities from the campus to society with the cooperation of local schools, companies, environmental groups, and local governments, such as activities with the Nagano Environmental Partnership Conference.
