Science Communication Workshop

Activity report

We held a hands-on workshop designed to improve English communication skills for students of the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology on July 5. About 40 students and faculty members participated in the event, which focused more on basic skills than a similar workshop held last year.
The first part of the two-part series began by asking what scientific English is, and participants focused on how to best communicate key information to listeners and readers as they explored that question in a systematic manner. Addressing a topic of critical interest to researchers, the workshop also asked how research findings can be disseminated efficiently and effectively. The emphasis on being aware of that aspect of communicating, which is more difficult than merely expressing oneself in English, seems to have been quite inspiring to the students who participated.
While it's undeniable that the workshop presented a somewhat high bar for fourth-year students who have no experience writing papers in English, it's the willingness to embrace the challenge of communicating in the language that's important.
