A day with Prof. Rosenau

Activity report

The program students spent a day with Professor Thomas Rosenau from theUniversity of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna on November 28, 2014. Prof Rosenau was invited by the Institute for Fiber Engineering at Shinshu University for a week.

First off, Prof. Rosenau took his time to introduce his research, his work at the university, and a general introduction to Vienna, Austria. Six undergraduate students who have been accepted into the program starting in April 2015 also joined this special class.

Prof. Rosenau's expertise is in cellulose chemistry, chemistry of renewable resources, and wood chemistry. His lecture focused on regenerated cellulose fibers. During his talk he spoke about Vienna, and the students were mesmerized by its charming scenery and its spectacular nature. Learning about the city raised the expectations of the undergraduate students who will attend a workshop there next May.

After the class, the students took Prof. Rosenau to the cafeteria for lunch. We, the program secretariat watched over them only for the very beginning and we were nervous for them, but to our happy surprise, they were comfortable enough to interact with Prof. Rosenau and have fun. They seemed to be overcoming their shyness and the language barrier.

Each student had a private 30 minute tutoring session with Prof. Rosenau in the afternoon. They started off by introducing themselves and then explained their own research. Compared to a similar opportunity with Prof. Lim (National University of Singapore) in September, the students thought they did a better job. All the students said it was fulfilling for them to spend a day with Prof. Rosenau and they enjoyed the day very much. A big thank you to Prof. Rosenau who was very attentive, friendly, and welcoming to them.
