Practical Training with Silk Spinning Machines

Activity report

Students conducted a practical training on June 4, 2014. The training is a part of the "Practical Study in Fiber Fundamentals" started from this April.
In the class, they learned the process of the silk spinning and produced the ring spun yarn.
Ken Tsujimoto, one of the students, describes his experience was an eye-opener.
"We participated in practical training using a set of silk spinning machines owned by the Faculty of Textile Science and Technology. Although the machines date from the Taisho period (early in the 20th century), they remain in use to this day thanks to a careful and thorough program of maintenance. We gained hands-on experience in the entire process of making fine thread, from carding to spinning, and it was an eye-opening experience to see how much creativity is involved in spinning thread in a consistent, uniform manner. We also gained an understanding of the fundamental importance of uniformly spun thread in weaving high-quality cloth."
