活動の概要

豊かな「知の森」を！
信州大学長　山沢清人

　信州大学が全学的に取り組んでいる環境活動は、本年2010年に大きな節目を迎えます。工事中のため環境ISO14001の認証取得の対象から除外されていた医学部・附属病院へのサイト拡大です。これにより、2001年の工学部から始まったISOの認証取得が、附属学校園を含め、名実ともに「全学」となります。

　この10年で、日本だけでなく世界の環境に対する意識は高まり、多くの企業や大学がISO14001の認証を取得しております。信州大学では、工学部が全大学中9番目、国公立大学では初めてISO認証を取得して以来、全国の大学をリードしながらエコキャンパスづくりに励んできました。信州大学の環境活動の大きな特徴は、学生が中心となっていることです。大学の宿命で、学生が毎年大幅に入れ替わるなか、着実に継続していくのは簡単なことではありません。教職員だけでなく学生達も、後輩の育成に試行錯誤を重ね、創意工夫を凝らしてきました。まさにPDCAサイクルの実践といえるでしょう。この経験の蓄積は、信州大学の貴重な財産です。各キャンパスの環境リーダーとして熱心に活動してくれている学生達は、確かな「環境マインド」を身につけ、将来の社会生活全般におけるリーダーたるべく、大きく成長しているのは、喜ばしいかぎりです。

　「環境」には、文系／理系の枠を超えた総合力が求められます。信州大学が文系3学部、理系5学部の8学部を擁する総合大学の特色を生かして一丸となって取り組めば、得意分野の理工系の科学技術に、人文・社会科学系の知見を加えて掘り下げ、一層深く高度な科学技術に磨き上げていくことができます。そして必ずや、人類の持続的発展に貢献する成果があがり、信州大学のプレゼンスがより高まることと確信しております。信州大学は「知の森」を目指しております。「知の森」は、明るく透明性高く風通しよく、様々な木が信州の地にしっかりと根を張って成長を続ける英知の結晶です。教育研究における環境への取組を通し、信州の「知の森」の木々が、肥沃な大地から澄んだ空に向かって大きく繁り、日本中、そして世界中にその豊かさと恵みをもたらすように、ますます励んでいきましょう。信州大学の皆さん一人ひとりのご尽力に期待しています。

A Rich Forest of Knowledge

Shinshu University's organization-wide environmental activities reached a major milestone in 2010 with the extension of ISO 14001 certification to the School of Medicine and Shinshu University Hospital. These two facilities had been excluded owing to construction, but now with their inclusion, the ISO 14001 certification that started with the Faculty of Engineering in 2001 now encompasses the whole university, including the affiliated school zone.

Over the past decade, awareness of environment issues has risen both in Japan and throughout the world, and a great many businesses and universities have obtained ISO 14001 certification. Since Shinshu University's Faculty of Engineering became the ninth university facility in Japan, and the first among national universities, to obtain certification, the university has been a frontrunner among nationwide eco-campus initiatives. A major feature of our university's environmental activities is that our students are at its core. Such is the fate of universities with the large annual turnover in student population that sustaining a legacy is no easy feat, but our students have worked alongside faculty and administrative staff to educate their juniors, trying all sorts of ideas and demonstrating ingenuity and originality. They constitute, in my mind, an excellent example of a PDCA cycle in action. As it builds up, this kind of experience becomes a valuable asset to the whole university. It is heartening to see how the students who are actively involved as environmental leaders on each campus develop their own "eco-mind" and show the kind of personal growth that will enable them to stand out as leaders in society at large.

Environmental issues require all-round abilities that go beyond any borders between science and the humanities. If we at Shinshu University make the most of our all-round capabilities as a university with three humanities and five science faculties and pool the knowledge of our liberal arts and social science resources with our strengths in science and technology, I think that we could further advance and add depth to our scientific and technological endeavors. I believe that this would produce results that could contribute to sustainable development, and by extension boost our university's presence. We are aiming to become a "forest of knowledge"?a bright, open and airy forest that enables all kinds of trees to put down sturdy roots and grow in the Shinshu region. We will do our utmost to ensure that through our educational and research efforts, the trees of our forest of knowledge thrive in Shinshu's fertile land, reach for the skies and spread their vigor and goodness throughout Japan and the rest of the world. I have high expectations for the contribution that everyone at Shinshu University can make to the world.
