The Department of Architecture at Shinshu University
The Department of Architecture at Shinshu University has set the following academic objectives in order to achieve desired goals:
1.Fundamental engineering education and research
- To provide leadership skills in the construction field
- To provide engineering skills to serve as an integral contribution to world society
- To train students to think logically and ethically
2.Areas of emphasis
- Increasing environmental awareness
- Introduction of a new space perceptions
- Development of materials knowledge
3.A comprehensive study of architecture and city infrastructure
- Implementation of education in the area of overall design
- Implementation of education concerning alternative engineering technologies
- Implementation of education related to technology for community- based adaptations
4.Area of concentration
- Environmental design and building facilities
- Structural design
- Restoration of traditional Japanese houses and historic districts
Common Core Courses /Core requirements
The core common courses are composed of 6 main areas of study. A total of more than 25 units of credit is required toward degree completion.
General Education
More than 14 units of credit are required toward degree completion. Students can design their own course schedule depending on their interests.
Foreign Language
More than 8 units of credit are required. We offer general English study and English conversational courses. Students are required to earn more than 4 units of credits during the freshmen year and 2 units of credit during the sophomore year.
Health science
More than one unit of credit is required. To obtain a teaching license, a practical sport course is required.
Major core courses
Major core courses are divided into 2 main courses of study. A total of more than 95 credits is required toward degree completion.
Introductory courses/ Basic courses
These introductory courses are designed to provide students with a general knowledge of architecture. Students are required to earn more than 12 credits during their first and second years.
Major course of study /Advanced courses
These courses are designed to offer in-depth study of architecture. Students are required to study both civil and architectural engineering during their first year, to acquire a wide range of architectural knowledge. Students are required to take advanced courses during their second year. More than 84 units of credit are required.

Examination Prerequisites
Certificate of First-class qualified architect
Candidates must have 2 years of working experience in the related field after graduation. Doctoral course students may count a Master Course 2- year study period toward the required work experience. For further information, please contact the Japan Architectural Education and Information Center.
Certificate of Second- class qualified architect
Candidates can take the examination following graduation.
Certificate of qualified architect for wooden buildings
Candidates can take the examination following graduation. For further information, please contact the Japan Architectural Education and Information Center.
Certificate of Interior planner
Candidates are required to have more than 2 years of work experience in the related field. For further information, please contact the Japan Architectural Education and Information Center.
Certificate of engineering consultant
