Background

The 21st Century COE Program made substantial achievements in the areas of university reform, fostering of young researchers, developing new academic fields, and improving the level of research activities. In light of the progress for a knowledge-based society and globalization, the importance of training people to be international caliber researchers is becoming more evident. Therefore, a post-21st Century COE Program must be implemented in an even more enhanced and expanded form. Thus, we implemented the Global COE Program in 2007 with the intent of drastically strengthening training programs for young researchers and establishing a world-class education and research center.
