Innovation of fiber and textile presenting advanced material used for various fields.

"Textiles and fibers" is the general term for materials characterized by being long and thin. Textiles and fibers are not used solely for apparel, but as leading-edge materials in a variety of fields including aircraft, automobiles, medicine, energy, environment, civil engineering and construction. IFES promotes creation of" frontier fibers" with various functions and capabilities, research into biological fibers and fibers for medical use through medical-engineering collaboration, and development of medical robots and control technologies. It is also engaged in creation of smart textiles with new functions by merging the fields of nanotechnology and nanofiber, and research aimed at creation of fashions for a world market of 7 billion people through technological innovations.

The Vision for Research

  • Research and development of nanofibers and next-generation fiber materials
  • Research and development of biological fibers and fibers for medical use
  • Research and development of composite materials and textiles with a sensing function
  • Kansei evaluation and design of textile products, and development of a fashion engineering-oriented analysis and design approach

Director's Message

World-class research continues to innovate textiles

The Institute for Fiber Engineering (IFES) was launched as an organization constituting the Interdisciplinary Cluster for Cutting Edge Research (ICCER) in April 2019. Tasked with carrying on the legacy of its predecessor, the IFES, which has worked aggressively to develop international research over the last five years, the next-generation IFES will pursue new developments in textile and fiber engineering, an area of particular strength at Shinshu University. In research, the Institute will develop fiber engineering into a variety of interdisciplinary fields and work to leverage them to spur new manufacturing and value creation in a broad range of industries. It will also pursue international and industry-academia collaboration and take advantage of the results to educate students so that they will be able to pursue careers as global professionals in fiber engineering. We will continuously communicate information about the results of these activities while pursuing partnerships with researchers and engineers inside and outside the University as we strive to accomplish the Institute's mission. We aim to develop into an institute that enriches people's lives through fiber innovation and brings the world together by promoting SGDs.
