Summary of Activity

The gastrointestinal surgery team clinically treats patients with carcinomas of the esophagus, stomach, colorectum, and the other neoplasms of the GI tract including stromal tumors, and furthermore treats patients with inflammatory or functional disorders of the GI tract. We have provided less invasive laparoscopic and/or thoracoscopic surgery for these patients, whenever possible.By the end of June 2010, a total of 277 living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) have been performed with a 5-year and 10-year survival rates of 84 and 80% respectively. The Division performed the third successful LDLT in Japan in June 1990 and pioneered the application of LDLT to adult patients in 1993.   Liver resection for hepatocellular carcinoma totaled up to 520 cases by the end of Dec. 2009 with mortality rate of 0.6 % and 5-year survival rate of nearly 60 %. For patients with biliary malignancies, we have performed 30 major liver resections concomitant with pancreatoduodenectomy with zero mortality. We have provided laparoscopic surgery for liver or pancreatic neoplasms and inguinal hernia since 2008.We have offered the best possible care with safer way for patients with cancer and/or end staged liver disorders.

Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery
Esophagus

(1)Invasion and metastasis of esophageal cancer including Barrett’s adenocarcinoma as well as squamous cell carcinoma.
(2)Minimally invasive surgery for esophageal cancer patients with severe co-morbidities.
(3)Treatment and outcome of special types of esophageal cancer including basaloid-squamous cell carcinoma or endocrine carcinoma (small cell type).

Stomach
(1)Relationship between gastric cancer and H. pyroli infection of the stomach.
(2)Biologic and clinicopathologic analyses of carcinoma of the esophagogastric junction, especially Siewert’s Type-II adenocarcinoma.
(3)Chemotherapy for gastric cancer patients, especially with locally advanced tumors or postoperative recurrent tumors, using S-1+α.
(4)Changes of gastric mucins after chemotherapy for patients with gastric or colorectal cancers.
(5)Biologic and clinicopathologic analyses of neuroendocrine carcinomas of the stomach

Colon and Rectum
(1)Chemotherapy for colorectal cancer patients using FOLFOX or FOLFIRI.
(2)Biologic and clinicopathologic analyses, and multimodality-treatment for patients with poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma and signet ring cell carcinoma of the colon and rectum.
(3)Treatment for neoplasm of the anorectum including carcinoma and melanoma.
