���W3.6cm×H4.35cm�����11cm��22.2cmDNAisextractedfromthefamiliargreenhorseradishleaf,whichcontainsantioxidants.Thegreatestabilityofplantsisphotosynthesis,butthewhiteareashavelostthatability.Understandingwhythisiswillleadtoanunderstandingofphotosynthesisitself.EventhoughChinesecabbageandturnipsdonotlookalike,theyareinfactasinglespeciesthatcancross-pollinate.Ifwecanunderstandwhytheformsaresodifferent,wemaybeabletochangetheshapesofothercropsinsimilarways.���W3.6cm×H4.35cm�����14.9cm��22.2cmAstudentanalyzesthebasesequenceofDNAextractedfromaplantbyapersonalcomputer.ProfessorTaguchitookhiscurrentpositionafterworkingasanassistantprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversityandattheUniversity’sDNAresearchfacility,andasanassociateprofessor.Hisareaappliedresearchbiochemistry,specificallyenzymereactionsandDNAanalysisrelatedtotheproductionofusefulplantmaterialspracticalapplication.AfterfromtheNagoyaUniversityGraduateschool,ProfessorHayashidaworkedatRIKENandthenmovedtoShinshuUniversitytoestablishtheGeneResearchCenterbeforetakinghiscurrentpositionin2009.HisareaofresearchisplantmolecularBreeding.Theleavesofthemulberrytreecontainasubstancethatiseffectiveinloweringbloodsugar.Wearestudyingthemechanismbywhichthatsubstanceiscreated.ofistheirandgraduatingInthefuture,itwillbetheoreticallypossibletocreateweedsthatcollectpoisonsthathavespreadthroughtheenvironmentorroadsidetreesthatglowwithoutusingelectricity,ortomakedifferentfruitslikebananasorapplesthattastelikechocolateorvanillaallonasingletree,asonemightexpecttoseeinacomicbook.Iamcarryingoutresearchintothenumerousfunctionsofplants.Forinstance,plantshavetheabilitytoattachsugarssuchasglucosetosubstancestheyproduce,storethemincells,andthenremovethesugarlaterwhenitisrequired.Inmylabweareexaminingwhetherthisfunctioncanbeputtouseinmedicinethroughapplicationtotheprocessingofsubstances.Ifvegetablescouldcureallergies,ricecouldsurviveglobalwarming,andfruitcouldgroweasilyinsideaspacecraft,whatwoulditbelike?Iamcarryingoutresearchonselectivebreedingusingthegeneticresourcesofplantstocontroltheirshapeandform,forexampleregardingthenutritionofplantfiber,andtomakethemgrowreadilywithoutcontractingdiseases.
