IamcarryingoutresearchintoorganicEL(organicLED),anareathatisthefocusofincreasingexpectationsconcerningpotentialapplicationsinnext-generationdisplaysandlighting.MultinationalcorporationsfromoutsideJapanarealsoshowinginterest,andmylabiscooperatingwiththem.Ifsuccessful,itwillbecomepossibletomakeentireceilingsandwallsintolightingandtomaketelevisionsandcomputermonitorsthatcanberolledupandcarriedaround.Currently,ourmajorchallengeistoreducepowerconsumption.Ourresearchtopicsarephotocatalystsandphotochemicalreactorsforcontrolledphotocatalyticoxidationofaromaticcompoundsandphotodecompositionofimpurityinwater.Photocatalystnano-hybridsforthereactionsaredesignedandfabricatedbytheLangmuir-Blodgett(LB)processandobservedbywaveguidespectroscopy.Wedevelopedanovelphotochemicalreactorwithanetworkoflightguidetodeliverexcitationlightandmicrochanneltotransfersubstratetoeachphotocatalyst.Partialoxidationofbenzene,waterpurificationandself-cleaningtextileshavebeenstudiedassomeapplicationsofthephotocatalyticreactionsystems.Photocatalyst particles onTextile Photocatalystparticlesaredepositedonprotectioncoatingofeachfiber.Langmuir-Blodgett processNano-complexfilmofsoapsandionsaretransferredontotheglassplatetofabricateNano-filmofphotocatalyst.ProfessorIchikawatookhiscurrentpositionin2013afterworkingattheUbeIndustriesPolymerResearchCenterandasanassistantprofessorandassociateprofessorintheFacultyofTextileScienceandTechnologyatShinshuUniversity.Hisareasofresearcharefunctionalmaterialsanddevicesandphysicalorganicchemistry,semiconductordevicesandorganicphotoelectricmaterials.ResearchAssociateinShinshuUniversityin1992.Fullprofessorin2012.Hisresearchtopicsarephoto-catalyticphoto-catalyst,microchannelandreactorsfunctionaltextiles.AnorganicEL.UnlikeLEDs,theprincipalcharacteristicofanorganicEL,aconductivepolymeristhatitemitslightfromaformlikeathinmembrane.Anorganicsemiconductormaterialdevelopedintheresearchlabismeltedandappliedtoacircuitboardtocreateatransistor.Wearecarryingoutresearchtocreateexampleusesthatleverageitsproperties.Photocatalytic reactor with anetwork of light guide coatedwith photocatalystincludingA photocatalyst reactor applied to an incubation plantof lettuceOutlook for researchInadditiontoresearchintoorganicEL,researchisalsobeingactivelyconductedintoorganicsemiconductorsandorganicsolarcells,andtheseproductsareexpectedtocontributetotherealizationofanabundantandsustainablesociety.Outlook for students after graduationGraduatesareemployedbymaterial,chemical,andelectricalequipmentmanufacturers,whilesomestudentsareemployedbymajorprintingcompaniesthatareinvolvedinorganicELdevelopment.Outlook for researchOurphotocatalyticreactionsystemhasbeenappliedtoefficientorganicphoto-redoxreactions,andwillhopefullybeappliedtophotocatalyticreactionstoproducechemicalresourcesfromH2OandCO2asanartificialphotosynthesisinthecomingfuture.Outlook for students after graduationResearchworkinourlaboratoryhasraisedproblem-solvingabilityofstudents,whoworkforcompaniesinthefieldsofchemistry,chemicalplant,electronicsandmachineryaftergraduating.ProfessorICHIKAWAMusubuProfessorUSAMIHisanaoDepartment ofChemistry and MaterialsDepartment ofChemistry and Materials24Tapping organic EL to bring us future productssuch as televisions that can be rolled up andcarried and ceilings with built-in lightingPhotocatalytic Reaction SystemsSupported on Fibers and Beads
