50Outlook for researchI hope to utilize genomic information to improvebreeding systems so that we can achieve stablefood production.Outlook for students after graduationI hope that graduates will pursue careers inresearch or food-related businesses.Outlook for researchcanadaptOutlook for students after graduationProfessorMATSUMURA HideoAssociate ProfessorOGASAWARA HiroshiUnderstanding the development of biofilms to explore thesurvival strategies of bacteria based on genomic informationDivision ofGene ResearchDivision ofGene ResearchProfessor Matsumura took hiscurrent position in 2021 afterworking as a senior researcheratIwate BiotechnologyResearch Center. His areas ofresearchfunctionalincludegenomics for large-scale analysisof gene expression and plantbreeding.Associate Professor Ogasawaratook his current position in 2021after working as a ResearchFellow at the Research Centerfor Micro-nanoTechnology anddepartmentFrontierBioscience in Hosei University. He explores the network of geneexpression related to the biofilmformation in bacteria.Switching mechanism between planktonic growth and biofilm formation inEscherichia coli (left). Many bacterial species form biofilms, and switchbetween planktonic growth and biofilm morphology in response to changesin the external environment. There is increasing interest in bacterialamyloids contribute to biofilm formation as useful biomaterials.Electron micrograph of Bacillus subtilis (left). We analyze details of genes involved in the bacterial biofilm formation based on genomic information.A DNA sequencer can be used to sequence isolated genes. We collaborate with Okinawa Prefecture to understand thepapaya’s sex determination mechanism.Bacteria, whichnumerousenvironments, do not always express all of thegenes present in their genomes. To clarify themechanism by which bacteria express certaingenes depending on specific conditions,it willbecome possible to utilize the capabilities of eachbacterium to maximum effect. You can learn the knowledge of biotechnologywith strong social demand. Previous graduatesare employed by food, biopharmaceutical, textile, and recycling-related companies, etc.I use DNA sequencing technology that has shown significanttechnical advancement in recent years to carry out researchthat contributes to the selective breeding of crops. My labhas used plant materials ranging from rice and mulberries totropical crops obtained in collaboration with OkinawaPrefecture to carry out research into the efficient breedingof new varieties. In the natural environment, many bacterial species formbiofilms, and communicate with each other. We arecarrying out research to bacteria attached to solidsurfaces to understand which genes work in which waysas they develop into biofilms. We believe our researchwill play a useful role in the future development ofmedicines targeting bacteria which are harmful to theindustrial and medical fields.theoftoElucidating genome functions for food production
