24Department of Machinery and RoboticsDepartment of Machinery and RoboticsThe five senses are the senses that have beencultivated for humankind to survive. It's a necessarysense from birth to death. Of the five senses, thesenses of taste and smell are actively approachedby biology and engineering in various researchfields. These chemicalsensation sensing andreproduction technologies will be new technologiesthat will make a great contribution to the affluenceof people's lives and medical treatment.Since the laboratory was established in 2021, thenumber of graduates has been small, but thecurrent(including planned) arearchitecture, optical equipment manufacturers, andother graduate schools. I would like you to lead aresearch life that emphasizes problem-solving skillsand communication skills for research.Outlook for researchIf a surface robot is realized, there will be an immeasurabledemand for it, because of the hyper degrees of freedom ofthe robot that can be transformed. For example, it may bepossible to create a robot that can transform itself to adaptto the environment and reproduce evolution. Also, a surfacerobot can create a space inside by bending, and in somesituations, controlling the shape of the space is useful. Weare attempting to utilize this feature for securing the surgicalfield in endoscopic surgery.Outlook for students after graduationIn our laboratory, students can acquire the knowledge andtechnical skills of robotics and mechatronics. Additionally, they will acquire abilities that are useful after graduation, such as problem solving ability and presentation skills.Outlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationcareer pathsAssistant ProfessorIWAMOTO NoriyasuAssistant ProfessorTAHARA YusukeAssistant Professor Iwamoto receivedhis Ph.D. degree in engineering fromKyushu Universityin 2016. Afterworking as a postdoctoral fellow atKyushu University, he took up hiscurrent position in 2017. His researchinterests are the continuum robotsand the surface robots.Assistant Professor Tahara receiveda Ph.D.in Iwate University. Heworked at Kyushu University beforejoining Shinshu University in 2021.His research interest covers sensorengineering and bioelectronics.Truncated cone actuators whose radii are individually controllable on the front and back sides, and a mesh-type robot that represents a curved surface.A method for setting up a local coordinate system forsurface robots. The Cartesian coordinate system isobtained by connecting the reference region and therobot with conformal maps.Taste substance receiving membrane used for taste sensor (left)and its image (right). The taste substance receiving membrane iscomposed of lipid, plasticizer, and polymer membrane.Fabricated portable taste sensor. Multi-channel sensor withmultiple lipid polymer membranes mounted on a plasticsubstrate electrodeIf there was a robot that could shift its shape to anything, what function doyou think it would have? You may have imagined a swarm of microscopicrobots, or a robot that could make a phase transition between liquid andsolid. I think of the robot as a curved surface, because the outermost part ofthe object can be represented by a single surface. However, the history ofresearch on surface robots is short, and current robots have not yetachieved the ability to shift their shape to anything. Therefore, we areproposing new surface robots and control theories by making full use ofmathematics to describe curved surfaces, computer graphics technology andknowledge of biology. We are also looking for a new way to develop atheory of control for the continuum robots that have been developed so far.Smartphones have functions such as a microphone, touchpanel, and display. These are called physical sensors and aresensors that correspond to human hearing, touch, andthere are no chemical sensors thatvision. However, correspond to taste and smell, and even technologies thatreproduce them.If these technologies are realized, theworld will be a completely different world. In our laboratory,we will develop devices that sense and reproduce chemicalsensations.BioengineeringBioengineeringToward realization of a surface robot with shape shifter functionDevelopment of Devices providing happiness to society
