Our research results maylead to improvements in neonatal prognoses by establishing preterm birth predictionand prevention methods and promoting fetal lung maturation.After graduating and obtaining a Ph.D. degree, foreign students have returned totheir own country or worked in the USA as postdoctoral fellows. We are conducting research on refractory gynecological cancers (ovarian clear cellcarcinoma OCCC, uterine serous carcinoma USC, and gastric type adenocarcinomaof the cervix GAS).New candidate genes associated with the pathogenesis of OCCC were detected andfound to be a potential target for therapy. We have established the world‘s firstmouse model that develops endometriosis-related cancer by knocking out ARID1Aand PTEN, and now analyzing the carcinogenic process of endometriosis with thismodel. Focusing on the proto-oncogene PIM1, which correlates with the prognosisof USC showing rapid progression and resistance to treatment, we havedemonstrated the efficacy of Pim1 inhibitors against USC in vitro and in vivo. Wehave extensive experience in GAS, which has a poor prognosis and is difficult todiagnose at an early stage, and in the similar benign lesion, lobular endocervicalgland hyperplasia (LEGH), and are leading the world in basic and clinical research.Our original preoperative analytical diagnosis method has been established, and weare working to develop new treatment methods.Research subjectOutlook for researchOutlook for students after graduationNorihiko Kikuchi The placenta is involved in not only the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, andwaste, but also in hormone production and immunity. These functions affectfetal growth and the maintenance of pregnancy, but have not yet beenelucidated in detail. The insufficient invasion of extravillous trophoblasts (EVT)to the myometrium during placental formation in early pregnancy is a majorcause of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and intrauterine growthrestriction (IUGR), which significantly impair maternal and fetal health.Therefore, we focus on factors that regulate the invasion of EVT. We previouslyreported that LCN2, an iron transporter, promoted the invasion of EVT.Furthermore, among various biologically active substances secreted from theplacenta, such as hormones, we have investigated NRG1 as a factor promotingfetal lung maturation.
