Electrical& Computer Electrical& Computer 30In the FutureAfter GraduationIn the FutureAfter GraduationAssociate ProfessorHe received the Ph.Ddegree from Hiroshima University in 2007.His research area is low power VLSI circuit design and computer architecture. AssociateProfessorreceived the Ph.D. degree from Keio University in 2006. The research filed is multi-dimensional signal processing dealing with 2D image and 3D model.EngineeringEngineeringProgressesofelectronicsandinformationtechnologieshaveproducednewindustriesandservicesliketheInternet,amobilephone,etc.Espcially,thescalingtechnologyofVLSIrealizesawidevarietyoffunctionswithlowcost.Bythecommoditization,thematuredVLSItechnologyhasbeenusedinmanyareas.But,Japaneseelectronicsindustryisstrugglingwithcostcompetitiveness.Toovercomethis,wehavetodifferentiateproductsfromothersandcustomizeourVLSIchipwithacircuitdesigntechnology.Ourlaboratorywilldevelopanewcomputerarchitectureandsystemsbyco-designinghardware,softwareandapplication.KohJohguchiDoyouhavearegrettableexperiencethatyourbestshotisactuallynotsogood?Inparticular,darkplacephotographingorbacklightphotographingaredifficultforus.However,thedifficultyofhardwarecanbeaddressedbysoftware.Forexample,Ifyoutakeanotherimageandmakeapairofflashandno-flashimages,youcanobtainanoise-lessandblur-lessclearimageusingarecentcomputationmethod.Ourlaboratorydevelopsmethodstoobtainmorenaturalandhighresolutionimageslikewearefeeling.Keiichiro Shirai“TrillionSensorsUniverse”iscomingupsoon.Trillionsensorscollectandcomputemanyinformationfromtherealworld.Then,VLSIcircuitdesignbecomesakeytechnologyformedicine,agriculture,husbandry,logistics,architectureandcivilengineering.Todistinguishproductsfromthecompetitorsandproduceuniqueproducts,VLSIinnovationisessential.Inourlaboratory,studentscanstudynotonlydigital/analogcircuitdesignbutessentialtechnologiesfromsensordevicestosoftware.Byresearchinginconsiderationoftheoutput,wewillplayavitalroleinthedevelopmentofInformationCommunicationTechnology(ICT).Asagraduationwork,studentsinJohguchiLab.proposeacircuitandarchitectureandusetheirinventivenesstotacklearesearchproject.Studentscanstudyawideareaincludingdevicephysics,measurementtechniqueandsoftwaredevelopment,etc.Also,successfulexperiencesofachievingsomethingbecomeusefulforthefuturejob.Imageprocessing,especiallythecategoryofimagerestoration,stillhasamountainofproblemstoaddress.Forexample,deblurringofimagestakenwithhandheldcameraisstilldifficultone.However,iftheycanbesolved,wecanobtainmoreclearandhighresolutionimages.thebenefitsimprovetheaccuracyofitsapplicationfieldssuchasimagerecognitionforroboticsandsecuritysystem.Mainlyimageprocessingisassociatedwithmakersproducingcameras,projectors,printers,andscanners.Thedemand,however,isspreadinginindustryalongwiththedemandsofimagerecognition.Ouralumniisnowactiveinelectronicsandcarmanufactures.Inaddition,Denoisingby synthesizing textures of a flash image (left) and colors (also shadows) of a no-flash image (middle), and its output clear image (right).Creation of images based on human perceptual feeling.
