MaterialsChemistryMaterialsChemistryArtificial Photosynthetic System 16Variousceramic,inorganicmaterialsareusedaroundus.TheYamaguchiLaboratoryisconductingresearchonthesynthesisandapplicationofvariousinorganicmaterialsincludingmicaandalumina.Atpresent,weareundertakingresearchonthesynthesisofnovelmicacrystalsandthecompositeshavingmicroporesintheinterlayerregionofmicacrystals.Wearealsoworkingontheprocessofaluminaceramicsusinganewsol-gelmethodwithaninorganicsaltsolution.Efficientutilizationofsolarenergyhasbeenregardedasoneofthekeytechnologiestosolveworldwideenergyandenvironmentalissues.Incontrast,fluctuationsinsolarirradiationimposeacriticalbarrierforpracticalstorageandconveyance.InKageshimalaboratory,wehasbeenworkingtoconstructanovelartificialphotosyntheticsystemincollaborationwithNishikioriandphotovoltaic-assistedwatersplittingenablestocapturesolarenergyintheformofstorableandconveyablechemicalenergy,hydrogen.Micasandaluminashavebeenstudiedandusedformanyyears,butresearcherstodayarefindingmethodsofsynthesizingmaterialswithnewcompositionsandalsofindingnewphenomena.Inourlaboratory,studentsintheirsenioryearandgraduatestudentsareconductingtheexperimentsfortheirindividualresearchthemes.Manygraduatesfromourlaboratoryareworkingincompaniesrelatedtoceramicsandglassaswellasvariouschemicalmaterials.Theyarealsoactiveinvariousotherfields.Whilefuelcellshaveattractedgreatattentionas“green”energydevices,hydrogenusedinthefuelcellsisnowindustriallyproducedfromfossilfuels.Photocatalyticorphotovoltaic-assistedwatersplittingcanproducehydrogenfromonlysolarenergyandwater.Thus,itcanbeexpectedtocontributetoconstructtrulycleanandsustainablesociety.Webelievethatstudentscangainvariousknowledgeandcapability,suchasphysicalpropertiesofmaterial,surfaceanalyticalinstruments,duringresearchesofphotocatalysts.Throughtheseexperiencesofresearchesanddiscussion,weeducateourstudentssothattheyhavelogicalmindandguts.property,handlingandofSwellablemica crystals having a hexagonal plate-like morphology synthesized by using NaClas a flux.Alumina gels containing a small amount of organic additive lead to the formation of fine alpha-alumina particles at lower temperatures.↑Solarspectrum(left)andabsorbanceofvariousphotocatalysts(right).Developmentofphotocatalyticmaterialswithlongerabsorptionedgeisoneofthemostimportantissues(inset).↑(a)Synthesisofthematerialsinaglovebox,(b)assessmentofthephotocatalyticreaction,and(c)thephotoelectrochemicalmeasurements.AssociateProfessorFields of research: Ceramics, Inorganic Materials Chemistry, Clay Science, etc.Yosuke KageshimaAssociate ProfessorPh.D.: The University of TokyoHe started to work as an assistant professor in Shinshu University in 2018, and was promoted to an associate professor in 2023.
