Three new Next-Generation Research Centers were established in October 2021.The crystal growth technology known as the “flux method”, is one reason why the University is especially proud of its materials scientists.“Shindai Crystal®” aims to make Shinshu a region famous for its water. Shindai Crystal, a highly functional inorganic crystalline material made by the flux method, has been in development for a long time.Created in the Teshima Laboratory of the Faculty of Engineering, Shindai Crystal has left the campus and is now being employed to bring about a transformation in the use of water in the Shinshu region. A crystalline heavy-metal-ion adsorbent, which is one of the technologies in the Shindai Crystal range, is making a name for itself through commercially available, portable water purification bottles and bags. The technology has also been adopted by several of the region’s breweries and has led to the development of distinctive products such as sake and craft beer, that are affected by the quality of the local water. In addition, to boost the participation of local people in the achievement of the SDGs and as part of the “swee” project (“Shinshu water for ecology and environment”), an Aqua Spot has been set up where anyone can fill up their own bottle with local water. Several of these water-refill stations have been installed at Shinshu University and at public facilities in Nagano Prefecture, helping to reduce plastic-bottle waste and CO2 emissions.TOPICSWhat’s Special about Our Research?
