Elderly population is expanding worldwide. Accordingly, many countries and local govern-ments adopt a social policy to promote aging research. Postgraduates will play an active role globally as an expert of aging research and contribute to human society. ・Functional analysis of glycans using genetically engineered mice. ・Role of gastric gland mucin-specific O-glycans in preventing gastric cancer.・Investigation of various helicobacter species in gastric diseases.Outlook for researchIt may be useful for novel molecular therapies and diagnoses of cancer and inflammation through elucidation of the biological functions of glycans expressed on cell surface or secret-ed from cells under pathological conditions. In addition, anti-microbial drug design exhibiting an anti-microbial effect on H. pylori can be provided. H. pylori resistant to antibiotics become the problem of eradication currently. To be glycobiological specialists such as researchers in universities or public institutes, pri-vate laboratories, or hospitals.12-month-old Senescence-Accelerated Mouse SAMP1 (top) and normal mice (bottom)Electron microscopic image of amy-loid fibrilsHuman gastric cancer cell line.Reduced form of coenzyme Q10In our laboratory, we are always actively discussing the relationship between glycans and gastric cancer.Summary of ActivityDiverse physical functions deteriorate with aging. This phenomenon is called senescence. Senescence is associated with various age-associated diseases, such as hypertension, cancer, and dementia. The long-term goal of research in our laboratory is to understand senescence of organism, and age-associated diseases.Summary of activityGlycans are regarded as the third biological chains of fundamental biopolymers, followed by nucleic acids and proteins, that closely associated with the biological phenomena such as development, immunity, infection, and cancer. We investi-gate the participation of glycans in causes of various diseases using techniques such as morphology, molecular biology, biochemistry and genetic engineering. Recently, we demonstrated that αGlcNAc protects gastric mucosa against Heli-cobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and serves as a tumor suppressor for differ-entiated-type gastric adenocarcinoma.Aging BiologyMolecular Pathology(Chief: Prof. Jun Nakayama)Healthy aging for everyone!!Understanding mechanism of gastric cancer development through glycobiology
