We treat various thoracic diseases, including thoracic malignancies such as lung cancer, thymic epithelial tumors; benign conditions such as pneumothorax; and chest trauma. We specifically provide patients with a “surgery without pain” utilizing a minimally invasive surgery to reduce physical invasiveness and postoperative pain, and a “surgery without shortness of breath” or segmentectomy to preserve postoperative lung function using three-dimensional computed tomographic (3D-CT) images in patients with small, early-stage lung cancer. Our research projects・To investigate segmental anatomy of the lungs utilizing 3D-CT images to develop novel surgical strategies to preserve lung volume in patients (Figure)・To integrate lung regeneration technologies and lung preserving surgical strategies to establish safer and oncologically more effective treatment for lung cancer・To investigate a clinical and molecular pathology of lung cancer・To develop immunotherapy (CAR-T cell therapy) for lung cancerResearch for the future Our research target is mainly lung cancer, with the highest mortality rate among all malignan-cies. All our efforts in lung cancer research will lead to the interests of individual patients and the development of future thoracic surgery. Vision after graduationWe support you in becoming an “academic surgeon” who can treat patients with evi-dence-based approaches with excellent clinical knowledge and genuine skills and publish your achievements based on basic and/or clinical investigations to pursue various questions/inter-ests in clinical practice. Let us aim to develop a “number one” thoracic surgery department in Japan and the world. Summary of ActivityWe mainly provide surgical treatment for breast and thyroid cancers. We strive to train “academic surgeons” who can provide treatment based on a scientific understanding of tumors and can devote themselves to basic medical research on tumors as well as clinical work.((Chief: Prof. Ken-ichi ItoSurgerySurgeryWe Aim to be Number One!As a surgical oncologist, we aim to develope treatments for breast and thyroid cancer!
